View Full Version : Bonnet Tape

I've looked at the latest offerings for bonnet tape/bonnet webbing for Series Land Rovers and I'm not impressed.
I've seen white tape (mind you it'll soon get dirty & blend in), the latest today was a very poor offering from Bearmach. It looked like gland packing, heavily loaded with graphite which comes off on everything it touches. It would 'lubricate' things and help the bonnet move around but I'm not convinced that's helpful. When I got some for my Series I some years back it was Khaki cotton.

I've found a brown cotton tape in the UK (19mm wide) and also the copper bifurcated rivets to attach the tape (Series I & II use rivets Series III uses clips). I have to confirm shipping costs, lead time etc. but would anyone else be interested ? I'm considering ordering a 30m roll which will be enough for 30 LR's.
It would be roughly $15 for 1m of tape and 10 copper bifurcated rivets (plus postage in Australia) but as mentioned the price has to be confirmed.

I'll also check out Scotts and I found a company in Bayswater to follow up.

Hi Colin,

Back in the dreamtime it used to be called "dogbone" insulator. My quick Google Search turned up lots of "dogbone" but not the one we are after. May be hidden away in a catalogue somewhere though.

I think it was JohnE who used an old ex-army SLR sling for the strip on his Series 3 (old REMLR forum). I bought one via ebay and it looks a lot like the remains of what it still fitted to my Series. Near enough perfect width and enough length for one bonnet.

Founds lots of alternatives listed under 'bonnet lacing', 'bonnet tape' etc. Used on vintage cars in various widths in flat and 'dogbone' (great description). Dogbone is specifically for riveting into place.
Woolies Trim - Bonnet Tape (http://www.woolies-trim.co.uk/c-136-bonnet-tape.aspx)
One site I found mentioned that it was used for vintage vehicle bonnets and the last production vehicle to use it was the Series II Land Rover (somehow they missed the Series III).

Most Land Rover suppliers locally seem to source through *itpart or Bearmach and they are now suppyling the white tape or the gland packing.

Lots of UK suppliers and as usual at a far better price than local (although I will check with Scotts), freight adds to the cost but buying in bulk reduces the cost a bit.
I need 3 plus a couple of spares.

Keith,

The bonnet strip looks like the 'gland packing' I looked at yesterday (Bearmach). Is it full of graphite ?
Cost from the supplier I'm looking at would be much cheaper for rivets & tape.

Steve,

I found that one, the rivets are brass plated (steel ?) rather than solid copper. The tape looks OK but no clear view of the cross-section.
Also I measured original tape at 3/4" or 19mm and the Ebay tape is 16mm.

Interesting that 12 rivets are listed, I counted 10 on a Series III so I'll just go and check a Series I & II.

This part is available from P.A. Blanchard in the UK, part No 300824, cost is 8 pound 95 pence which is at today's exchange rate of $15.08 + postage, it will be correct in every detail, length & colour, I also imagine they would have the rivets as well, cheers Dennis:angel:
ps I have bought several of them (300824) over the past few years,,.

You are right. I did not spot that. I asked and they confirmed so are giving me a refund as not posted yet.:)
Could you put me on the list for three strips and rivets please.

If I've worked the prices out correctly I'll be able to supply 1mtr of the tape plus 10 rivets for about $15, just the local postage to add (knowing Australia Post probably more expensive than shipping from the UK and it'll take longer !!).
I need to check the rivet dimensions & the holes in a couple of different radiator panels.

I couldn't get onto Blanchard's website but found them via Ebay. Looks like the same strip I've located.

I have some prices but need to confirm the freight, the email reply I got didn't cover exactly what I asked for....

The tape is 'bitumen impregnated' which is I guess what gives it the brown colour. I'll ask some more questions but it looks 'period', the bitumen would stop the ends coming undone because everything will be stuck together. The supplier lists it as 'stiff as per original'. I fitted a tape to my Series I a few years ago and it was a bit 'floppy' and the ends are coming undone.

I still have to check my Series I & Series II for rivet holes etc.
I noticed on my Series III that the ends of the tape were trapped down between the radiator panel & the wings, certainly stops the ends fraying or coming loose.
The copper bifurcated rivets are 7.5mm head, 3.8mm shaft and 12mm long. I think the original rivets were 3/16" so these are a bit smaller diameter.
The company I'm dealing with supply vintage parts not Land Rover so it's these rivets or find another supplier.....

Still waiting for a straight answer from the supplier.
I ask a question, his answers don't tie up with the question ?!

SII & SIII have 10 rivet holes will check the S1 out at the weekend.

For the benefit of Qlders more than others I guess, I picked mine up at "The Rubber Shop" or some such place at South Pine Rd in Enoggera a couple of years back.
It was originally black but after I soaked it in bleach it went back to its original lighter colour.

Just phoned the UK & placed an order for 20mtrs & 240 rivets.
More news when it arrives and I have the price confirmed (i.e. how much the bank has skimmed off the deal).
Virtually all 20mtr is allocated.

Bonnet Strip has arrived.
Rivets counted out, strip cut, ready to ship. those of you that expressed interest will already have a PM.

12 rivets per 1 mtr strip which is perfect for a Series I and gives you a couple of spare bifurcated rivets on a Series II, IIa and III.
Rivets are copper not plated steel.

Feedback is good so far (there's always an element of nervousness when buying for others).

When cut, the thicker parts show a white filling. I'm going to dye with some wood stain (a texter would probably do just as well) when dry I'll seal the end with varnish. The reason is that I have a number that have unraveled at the ends.

I'm just modifying an eyelet tool that has replaceable anvils so that I can make a neat job of installing the BIF rivets.
