As with the same question you posted in the technical section.....why would you want to use an AGM in a Series 1 ?

I'm using a calcium type battery (fully sealed) in the Defender (plus a second deep cycle battery). After about 4/5 years the battery passes to one of the Series vehicles, used occasionally for starting and occasionally charged up with a battery charger. I typically get another 4 years use.

If you have the vehicle standing idle for long periods an AGM will discharge at a lower rate (just connect up a charger to a calcium battery occasionally). Both AGM & Calcium are sealed. AGM you can mount upside down or on it's side (can't see that would be helpful on a Series 1). AGM is more 'rugged' but you can buy calcium/conventional lead acid batteries with extra plates that claim to be more suitable for off-road. Personally I've never had issues with the standard batteries. You can discharge an AGM to a lower level than a deep cycle and it doesn't damage it (your car won't start so not sure if this is helpful for a Series 1 cranking battery).

Back to the original question...Yes, but I can't see any benefit.

I hear you, I use Calcium batteries in boats. My first lot lasted 9 years of starting and house bank and I lived on the boat for 5 years. I only changed them as AGM were required for survey.

I have been given an AGM that's why I ask. It's old but bigger than what I've been using and were off to the snow this weekend.

Funny this poped up.... I was wondering if I can charge my 10 ah deep cycle agm That's my use for the idea( run led lights phone radio. Charge small USB appliances etc ... Standard starter though dc's cost to much .

Charging and use as starter is OK as long as Gen is regulated V below 14.4 max initial of 14.7.

In the end it's such low Amperage but its hardly a smart charger.

I will probably trial it and see then if all goes well, and put it on a smart charger between uses.

AGM Batteries main use is as a storage battery used in caravans etc were current drain is fairly low over a long time
they do not like large amp drain ie stating current
they require smart chargers that belt 80 % and then use a trickle like charge to top up
a generator can not do this
but a old Lead Acid type that will be quiet happy with your old 60 year old generator.
remember the age of your vehicle and use the bits and pieces that the Wilkes boys put in them, smart bits need smarter bits to run them

Apparently they can be discharged to a lower level than a deep cycle battery without major damage so starting current is OK.

Spoke to distributor

No problems with use as planned.

Did over 250 miles on weekend,

Marysville Woods Point Jamieson Summit of Mt Skene run to Jam and return to Healesville.

300mm Snow.
