View Full Version : Occasional headlight problem

I'm not great with electrical problems, so wondering if anyone can advise me please?

My Puma headlights will occasionally not switch on, but I can usually get them to work if I put the high beam on, and then back to main beam, or flash the high beam. I usually leave the spotties turned on with the high beam. The problem happens when I'm up country & it's parked in the open.

Once it's working, it's fine & will switch on & off happily. Once garaged & back home the problem seems to disappear.

I changed the headlight relay...the right hand one on the bank of 4 under the dash, I was informed. The switch feels like it is working properly & not like when I had to replace it once before. I haven't ruled that out, but maybe there are some more likely things I should look at first?

Cheers
Brid

it will more than likely be the switch itself......its a known problem as all the current for the lights go through the switch

a lot of us have replaced the switch but also added relays to take the load.....switch will last forever

Thanks Kelvin

That's interesting...I'd always assumed it went through a relay. Good idea to add one.

i once had a similar problem - interaction with the alternator and an almost dead battery was the cause. new battery fixed it.

Sorry to hijack the thread,

Ive just had my switch burn out again, on a TD5, and am looking to add a relay.
Is there a specific relay part number that i should be adding?

Thanks

You could try these:

Def-HWUK Headlight Wiring Upgrade Kit | TRAXIDE - RV | Traxide - RV (http://www.traxide.com.au/headlight-wiring-kits/def-hwuk-headlight-wiring.html)

Hi Brid I've had my share of light problems , most through my own making , Land Rover switches are not the best , but they do the job . Run your spottys through relays , also don't put higher power globs in ,the switches don't like that , unless you use relays . If you need new switches get them from the uk. they will cost less , including post . cheers jimr1 :)
