Windows 8 has done it to me again! I had installed a couple of programs for a specific purpose but they seemed to cause me trouble so I decided to run system restore. This is where everything hit the fan. The computer sat there for over half an hour telling me that it was. correcting the registry. the computer failed and then brought up the screen telling me that a fault had occurred and then indicated that the automatic repair program was running. It then switched to diagnosing my pc. after that nothing works. I am almost over it. Any suggestions? The computer is relatively new. Jim :(:(

I know how that feels. I HATE Windows 8.

....I dumped it and went to Apple - at the suggestion(?) of SWMBO. It was a punish at first, but won't be going back.

Sorry I can't help mate, all the best.

Matt.

You probably have a number of system restores. Try going back to an earlier one than the one you already tried - perhaps it was already bung when it did the last system restore.

I had a couple of early glitches with my Win8 PC, and had to do a couple of 'skip back' system restores.

It is running well now though. So give that a try and see if it helps.

Keep persevering - after the initial 'strangeness' it is a really good operating system. Way faster then Win7.

Hope that helps
David

In addition to the useful posts above ;) , a lot of laptops come with a recovery partition where you can put them back to the factory installed configuration. Wipes all your programs/data but might be the quickest solution if its relatively new and you don't have a lot installed on it.

There's slightly different ways of getting to the recovery program depending on which laptop/manufacturer. Google is usually your best friend to work it out.

Sits there but will not load windows. The HDD light is flickering so something is going on but what? nothing works. insert recovery disk in drive and restart computer but won't boot from recovery disc.

why would you run system restore instead of just uninstalling the programs?

still got the box it came in?

Tap the F8 key continously after pressing start button till you get to the boot menu, then choose Last known good configuration, if that fails do it agian butvthis time chose safe mode and run your restore from there...

You may have to change the disc boot order in the bios so it tries booting from the optical drive first rather than from the fixed drive first.

I've had similar dramas with trying to restore Win 8.

If I had nothing better to do with my time I'd do the reversion back to Win 7 but I have made a decision to buy an iMac and a Macbook Pro later in the year (following updates) so it's not worth the effort involved.

I'm glad you have it "sorted".

Quick! Do a backup!

Have you had problems with Linux or is that just a throwaway line a bit like the Toyota drivers who just repeat the myth about Land Rovers being unreliable and Toyotas being unbreakable? :)

It wasn't really a serious suggestion on my part. I thought the comment about going back to Windows 7 might not have been entirely serious, so I thought I would continue in the same vein. I know Linux isn't for everyone.

This is all a bit off topic, but I have had no real problems with Linux during the ten years or so that I have been using it. Comparing the Linux experience today with the way it was 15 years ago is a bit like comparing a D4 to a Series LR. :D

i dont believe linux is suitable as a desktop replacement.
servers are a different story.

my comment regarding win 7 was serious.
ive tried using 8 and it had some features i liked, but too many negatives overall.

Yes, because your computer is booting from the HD. Not from the optical drive.

I work in IT for a large company and everyone laughs at windows 8 and all agree that ony worthwhile on a tablet............but why not go android if you have a tablet? Dude just go to a computer store, buy windows 7 and forget about 8 FOR EVER.........its the new Windows ME (for those that remember). Or if your game download OpenSUSE and install that, i love it on my laptop and with KDE desktop its so damn easy to use even when your used to windows 7 and you will be amazed with the performance and reliablity. Plus OpenSUSE completely circumvents any issues you may experience with windows and home theatre hardware using HDMI.................i spent many hours trying to get windows 7 to communicate right only to find the "Copy Protection" embedded in HDMI and windows stopped me getting audio ....!!

Then you need to open your eyes to todays versions.

Then you need to open your eyes to todays versions.

IMHO it's still rubbish ;)

some things it does really well

the things windows does really well it doesn't do very well at all, yes they are doable but no where as convenient or as easy a workflow or as intuitive for the less computer adept.

it is good for those with better than basic skills and hopeless for those with none.

as for the windows 8 haters, it taint windows 7 that's for sure, it is way more reliable than 7 in most environments IME.

and 8.1 will address the start menu dilemma so many cant cope with.

only seen 2 windows 8 boxes with severe virus infections and they both had norton installed. yet to get one in using the std built in version of defender that is heavily infected.

but as things go with computers.... much of the common problems can be categorized as ID 10 T errors and so called IT experts can make some absolute rippers....

If it won't boot from CD/DVD you might have to change the boot order in the BIOS.

My machine recognises a bootable CD/DVD and gives you about 10 seconds to hit any key to boot from CD. You have to be watching or it counts down and then boots from the HD.
