Using a WDH Discovery

Rather than buy into the thread running on the Disco at Jindabine thought I would post these on a new thread.
As you bare probably aware I have just done 9000klms to Sydney and back with a 3 tonne van on most of the time.
No I did not use a WDH but was asked in Sydney by a few recomened service places why not ?
I guess over the 3 months we were away we saw a many Disco's with a WDH as we did without both air and coilers.
Was not normally in a position to get a photo of them but this first one on a D3 2006 HSE, has towed his 3.2 tonne van now for 3 years always with the WDH shown fitted.
The second photo of the D4 I have no idea what the hitch is but most of the one we saw (and you don't see many Disco's towing) all had HR's fitted.
Not buying into the argument just commenting we were surprised at the number using them .

I'm pretty sure that the second photo is the base for a bike rack.

That would certainly make sense thanks, looks too light for a WDH, was seen in a hotel car park and explains why there was no van around !

Some people just believe in the need to use a WDH. I have done many 1000's of KLM without a WDH with a heavy van 3500kg 320 ball and I have never felt the need to use a WDH.

I saw a guy with an anti sway system on a van being towed by a D4 I asked him why he was using it. His reply I have always used it with other tugs... I explained that his D4 has trailer stability control...

I think the "I have always used one" is why you see people with a WDH on D3's and D4's

It's amazing how many non disco towers out there don't use them at all. And how about the people who have the WHD but fail to get a level van as they've set it up wrong! Typically the same ones who travel at 70kmph for safety and economy reasons...... Lets not start that discussion though.

Realy? Surely a van that is ar$e up at the back and hitch sitting low is a sign of poor balance?

A WDH is used to restore steering geometry and visibility on non-air-suspensioned vehicles and to restore some weight to the front tyres for more normal grip when braking or turning. Adjust the tow-ball height to get the van level but after setting-up a WDH if one is to be used.

Hi Glynhouse,
Second picture is definitely a bike rack as I have the same one!
I also tow a van regularly, 2000kg, without a WDH. About 180kg on the hitch, never the slightest wobble and normally tow at 100kmh.
