hi all thanks for the input on the tyres going to give the Hercules new ats a go next problem going to put a new boot on the drop arm ball joint.
does anyone know how to check the joint, is it okay to use a ball joint splitter and hammer any advice appreciated:D

it will separate like any other ball joint.
if the boot is split, it would be wise to replace the joint.
 
do yourself a favor and get the tool, similar to this one.

Yep, just split it as you would any ball joint, that's all I've ever done when replacing the boot. (or joint)
You can actually buy a complete kit for them too, new seat, ball joint, spring, boot and end cap, just pack with good quality moly fortified NLGI #2 grease, preferably a calcium sulfonate thickened one if you have it to hand.
If I had have thought about it at the time, I would've drilled and tapped the end cap for a grease nipple, but it's been fine for the last six-seven years.
