The wife's decided she's leaving with the kids. Selling up and letting me find myself and perhaps become a better husband and father and get over my pasts. It's not unrealistic but was completely out of the blue.

I'm at a loss as I have no family support of my own (cut them off a few years back due to the ongoing issues stemming back to one of the pasts), She's being very fair about it in splitting everything and not expecting anything, fair since I haven't really worked for the last 4 years. I've been the stay at home parent, cook, cleaner, driver etc but now it's really hard to get back into the workforce, especially as I'm not medically fit for my qualified field any longer.

So looking for a way to survive, somewhere to stay for a few weeks only at minimal cost and commitment as as soon as the Disco's back I'm heading off to Tasmania for 4-6 weeks to catch up on some friends and do some travelling and maybe even visiting a few of you all. I've been putting it off as I didn't think it was so cheap to take the car across.

Sorry to drag it down but I needed to tell someone, things are pretty bleak and not looking to get better.

Go to Bunnings in the plumbing section they will have a tub of paste (I forget the proper name for it, am a bit beer affected atm) or if you have a Blackwoods outlet nearby get some Bakers Soldering Fluid. It is an acid, you just need to dip the wires into this and solder should stick to it.

I'm supposed to be finishing a geologic report about a recent 3 day mapping exercise at Arkaroola, but i'm on AULRO instead!

as for the soldering, keep the tip clean, heat the work and the solder will flow into the joint, its not paint you don't brush it on, but rather the joint reaches the right temp and 'soaks up' the solder

If you're still struggling with soldering, need to clean the joints properly, get some emery paper, sand paper, even a nail file to scratch the oxidation off. Then use flux. If you don't have flux, and Yorkshire is the name of the one Debacle was talking about, use a bit of brown vinegar, the heat from the iron will help it work too, and the liquid will allow the heat to transfer quicker.
Soldering is all about cleanliness and heat transfer.

in regards to soldering I got taught to put melt some solder on the soldering iron first just enough so when you join the 2 wires it may make it stick. Also try twisting the wires together so it is not as fiddly.
I always try to keep the soldering iron under the wires.

I used to live on King Island - many moons ago when the mine was still operating. I remember the first day I started working down there in the assay laboratory during the school holidays. As we were next to the first aid post, part of the first day "induction" was to be shown how to drive the Landrover ambulance, and how to get to the various locations around the mine.

All of the underground vehicles were Landrovers back then. They tried Toyotas, but soon got rid of them because they rusted out in a matter of months. The underground was a pretty harsh environment. ;)

Will have to get back there one day for a look - still have a couple of friends living over there.

I don't want my kids, wife and family to live the horrors of war, I grew up in a war-torn country and I know what it means.

very sorry to hear:(, what a terrible situation. even though it may be of little comfort, remember we are thinking of you. stay safe.

The pondlife, indolent youth living here need to be reminded just how lucky they are living in a relatively peaceful country...

I use flux paste for soldering wires and caps etc, didnt acid go out with irons you had to heat in the fire or with a kero torch :o.

Sorry, but I can't stand trial by Media. If he is guilty, then the courts will prove it. I've seen innocent people ruined by similar accusations that have later been found innocent, but by then the media don't care and the damage is already done. Not saying he is or isn't, but we shouldn't jump to conclusions based only on what is reported...

Horrible accusations and horrible crimes but guilty till proven innocent remember....

I agree that they are horrible crimes and I am not going for what the press said, it is not a gossip it is a police report the said that they are serving four charges related to making indecent images of a child between March and July last year.
I do not take into account the other charges related to allegations of sexual assault, they have to be proved in court.

I would like to have a clarification regarding the legal (and not in reference to this case) system, why a person is arrested if is innocent till proved guilty?
Looks to me that in the way that is working the person is guilty until he/she can prove that is innocent which to me is wrong
What happens if the person do not have a fair chance (good defense) to prove that he/she is not guilty?

Chucaro, You get arrested at the initial time. Based on the offence you either are allowed bail, or if you're deemed to be a threat then you have to remain in police custody.
How you fight the charges is entirely up to you, unfortunately the more you can spend on a lawyer, the more likely you are to get off :(
I'd agree with Gav, doesn't matter what the truth is, but sensationalised crap sells.

So, it will be fair to say that if the offense is regarded serious by the prosecutor and the judge and the person do not have money for the bail he is as close as guilty as he/she can be?
And that if do not have the money for a defense which is as good or better that the prosecutor he/she will be an innocent person in jail?

Is so, forget about "trial by Media" is trial by an unjust system.
Then again I guess that there is not such thing as Court of Justice is a Court of Law :(

Disco Muppet
30th August 2013, 07:23 PM
That depends.
The sorts of offences where you get remanded in custody are normally REALLY serious ones, where it appears to be a pretty clear cut case against you, which are normally the ones that attract high profile defence lawyers.
So just because you've been remanded in custody isn't necessarily a guarantee of a conviction, but it certainly doesn't look good.

If you have to question the "Innocent until proven guilty" concept then, well, I really don't know where to go from there. But clearly you've never been on the receiving end of the Australian legal system.

I could list my own experiences, but suffice it to say that the legal system as we know it requires that there be someone to blame for an event. Look at the situation in the case of road accidents. Police prosecution will fight hammer and tong to find someone that's done something in the event that they can point to as causation.

Example. I now have a fraud conviction against my name because when I applied for, and on subsequent renewals of my driving licence I did not tick the box that states that I suffer from blackouts or seizures. Considered that I first applied for a licence at 16, I'm now 40 and have had (according to records) 14 renewals and I did not tick the box on any of them I was charged with 14 counts of the same event. Now the fact that I had never, prior to the accident that I had, never been diagnosed with any condition that would lead me to suspect that I did in fact suffer from blackouts or seizures why would I.

It cost me $80,000 , 5 years, my career & trade (to prove that I didn't know meant proving that I now did have a condition and such a condition made me medically unfit for my trade) and now my marriage. Added to that I was also charged with negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm because despite there being signs on the motorway banning cyclists from being there when I blacked out and ran off the road I hit one. Now his ignorance (now take it I'm not anti cycling, I used to quite successfully race) is in no way contributory. My undiagnosed medical condition was solely the cause.

So there I am sitting at home after the accident and being discharged from hospital when there's a knock at the door and I'm arrested for this and dragged off and formally charged.

So innocent until proven guilty I may have been as I was let out again (26 hours later) without bail but charged and summoned to appear. But, and I quote from the accident investigation squad member (who was after she was finished with my case medically dismissed from the force due to a number of things but suffice it to say she went on a personal vendetta against whoever she was investigating to the point of following them after hours etc), my "reckless disregard for dealing with a medical condition in a common sense manner led to the reckless endangerment of countless lives every day that this criminal (bear in mind I had never been arrested/charged or anything ever previous to this) spent on the road" was the single cause of the accident and despite having my own GP, two teaching professors of neurology, a cardiologist and the RTA's own head of medical standards all say that I had no record, knowledge or previous diagnosis of my condition I was found guilty.

So innocent until proven guilty it may be. But you're as guilty as they want you to be in the end. Sure I could have kept fighting it but at the end of the day where does it end. We did the exercise, of looking at each level of appeals process, to the extent of researching which judge you'd be up against and what their record was against matters of the same nature. In the end no guarantees can be made except this. You'll be broke and the lawyers won't.

As for Rolfy, I'll consider him innocent in the concept of the law but in this case to charge him as they've done then they've found some evidence already and it'll take some pretty hardcore proof to knock it on the head. But as a potential fiddler, well some of us know what happens to them once they're locked up.

Clubagreenie, I have a painful history about the "Justice" in Oz and as far I am concerned the system is that you are guilty until you have enough money to prove your innocence.
Years ago I was the victim in a case of commercial law, they delivered a summon to me to attend Federal Court and claiming $3500000 damages.
I saw a solicitor and was informed that they have to form a team with barristers and a QC experts in this type of cases.
It cost $500000 in legals to settle out of court. The other party used the shareholders money to bully us, we have to use our own
If we did not were able to defending ourselves we will be ruined for life.
Having said that the health cost of the 3 years that took the case was very high and no money can pay for that.

I've been on the receiving end too (hard to imagine).

Mine was even more unique.

Charge was: Assaulting A Family Member.

Problem: I didn't assault the person in question, they tripped (seriously) whilst being chased off my property - after kicking in my security door, the Drivers side panels of my brand new car and a few other bits and bobs during their tirade.

I requested the police attendance and that the individual be charged with property damage
And trespass - even the constable on the phone heard my yell "get off my property".

Whilst there was evidence of wilful damage Police Prosecutors decided it was too hard, so I got nothing.

Then a knock at the door and a piece of paper requesting I attend the Adelaide courthouse.
I attend, and I'm hit with a demand for bail by PPS.
Go figure!

Note: I still haven't even been charged with anything at this point!!!!!

So I talk my way out of bail requirements (had appeared on own recog. Etc) and told I'm due back in court on xx day.

So I lawyer up, fastidiously prepare my defence and then get told, to fight will cost 4 days and around $25-35,000 but I will win.

So I asked, how much to plead guilty? It turned out to be $3000 in lawyers fees, No conviction recorded and a $2000 fine paid to Victims of Crime.

(Oh and a lecture from the magistrate)

Total time in court room that time - 25 min.

Luckily, I walked out - got the last word on the Police Prosecutor (I felt better) and jumping in the already packed car with my new girlfriend (& now wife) and we went for a 2 week holiday on Macleay Island.

Upon my return I found more crap:
A claim from Victims of Crime for me to pay back the $8000.00, YES, $8000 that they paid out to my 'assaulted family member' for scaring caused by me.
A 4" long scar on an elbow.... :(

And a restraining order - claiming I had been out the front of the house verbally intimidating... I'd been in QLD for goodness sake!

Now, I could prove the scar wasn't me, I had old
Photos so that one got quashed... Another lawyer and a few thousand later.

But the bit that's got me... Is the restraining order.

It's 17 years since issue, I've been good ;)
The other party has breached the restraining order twice - and SAPOL are aware of this. I was even sitting in a station waiting for the Sarge, mobile ringing madly when the Sarge gets a call, writes down some detail and then hangs up.

Asks me my name, then proceeds to tell me where I live, etc!!! What the heck!

Turns out at that moment I was 'actually' threatening this person outside their house! And there I was thinking I was in a police station!

But the kicker....

I'm now allowed full access to several properties to shoot and hunt on - something I love doing.
But I cannot renew my firearms licence from years ago
Because - of a bloody 17 yo Restraining order, that will cost me MORE money to request cancellation.
Apparently I have to write to the court, it'll cost a few hundred to lodge etc...

And all over an Assault that:
I still have NEVER been charged with :)

I've checked, no charges...

So yes, I've had a bad run - not as bad as the members above for sure....

However, it's not a bad system - it tries its best.

The Law itself isn't the problem - it's those who are there to *judge* and lawyers...

Judges are often too soft or too prejudice and don't 'judge'.

And Lawyers.... Sure they've helped me out...
And sorry to any on here :)

But what a bunch of bottom feeding parasitic leeches on the misery and suffering of others! Most legal advice is so 'safe' as the lawyers themselves don't wish to become liable and the charges are ****ing appalling.

Next time I pay $150.00 for a letter to be written it better be on gold leaf paper and written in Unicorn blood

And $80.00 to read something? Seriously, my studies of Penthouse and playboy would be worth hundreds of thousands....

Ahhh, that feels better! I'm now going down the Man Cave to hit something for 30 minutes :D

If the individual had been male I would have knuckled them, alas, it was the ex-wife - hence no thumping...

Never hit a woman and never bloody will.

She really did just trip running down the driveway, and anyone with half a brain could see that, except the 2 members in the patrol took the immediate Big bloke, screaming woman approach and I was tagged as the instigator.

I'm sure they see some terrible domestic violence, but prior to leaving my first wife, the DV was all targeted at me. I've been hit by: baseball bat, frypan, broom, fist, kicked etc - even answered the door to SAPOL once, bleeding from the nose and lip and they were surprised to find that "she" did not have a mark on her...
Her screaming tirade had the neighbours ring the cops!

I consider it the mark of a man not to violently lash out at a woman - no matter how they're behaving.

I'm glad I left her and found the woman I'm married to now, we've been married 14 years this month (14th) And I'm happy!

I come across this a lot in my studies, across various topics ranging from the legal system, policing, politics, etc. Comes down to not a failed system/philosophy/etc but rather the failings of those implementing it.
I'm just lucky I haven't had anything to do with the courts, as I think with the amount of legal bull**** and poncing about that goes on, I'd get quite a few contempt of court citations :p

Nat Turmine; Here you go....

Things have really changed down in Broadmarsh town
Ever since wrinkle Arthur decided to move the cars around
Family on their farm all scurry and skuttle
Everybody's doing the Land Rover Shuffle
Denise got up an hour early
To help out her mate
She's gunna be helpful and open the gate
You really gotta move when you hear the horn blow
Or you'll get run over if you move too slow

Steve Ward; I could but I probably shouldn't.

Crawled under the County with PTO and driveshafts to check fit. Without mounting the winch yet, because its a heavy bugger and don't want to remove my bullbar just for half an hour!
Also had someone rock the car for me whilst I was under it to find where the clunk is coming from, suspected ball joint, as usual, but couldn't guarantee it. Goes in next Tuesday to have all the bushes replaced...
Otherwise the County has been hassle free for a sustained period, even with some pretty nasty four wheel driving in along the way!

Just voted, got abused by a token mother at the school because I wasn't cooking that BBQ. It was politely noted to her that I've cooked at every BBQ for the last 7 years and I was deliberately not told of this one because when I'm there there's nothing for anyone else to do. G'day All,

I wrote a very long document which had lots of spreadsheet based column graphs which I did in 3D. Turns out the Principal Supervisor does not like 3D column graphs. :( So I have to go through all the related spreadsheet documents - there are a lot of them - find each graph that I put into the Word document the supervisor comments on, and then change all the 3D to 2D. Then I have to copy this out of Excel - find the 3D version in the Word document and replace it with the 2D version. Nothing but a ship load of Fun happening here this weekend! :censored:

I do have an escape planned for tomorrow afternoon - I am helping Paul (Pop058) shift a Land Rover engine and some other parts. :) I will be able to see how the newly reinforced trailer floor holds up to the lift using my 950 kg ute crane. The first Land Rover engine I lifted up just after a "professional" reinforced the floor was a bit alarming. Especially when the floor buckled during the swivel as the engine was being swung around to manoeuvre it into the trailer . Cross fingers for tomorrow afternoon. I will be probably mumbling stuff about spreadsheets and column graphs and have a thousand yard stare by then.

PS: I forgot to mention that there is a line of data results in each of the column graphs that the Supervisor does not want either. This means I also have to change the original data in each spreadsheet too! Weeee

Kind Regards
Lionel

Can afford to! Because they aren't pumping the $$$ through the fuel tank! :D

And a TD5 upgrade doesn't make it match a V8, rather it makes it superior in torque curve and performance :)

I dont think so

Production of the 4.0 ended in 2001. The final version of the engine, used in the Land Rover Discovery, produced 140 kW at 4750 rpm and 340 N·m at 2600 rpm.

As opposed to the Factory TD5 spec of:
135kw @ 4200 rpm and 300Nm at 1950 rpm

Now, A V8 can be chipped for about $450.00 and gains a huge 18bhp (thats about 13kw) and around 30Nm or $34.60 per Kw

The TD5 base tune is $340.00 and gains 55kw (and around 80Nm of torque) taking it to 190kw and 380Nm (at 1950 rpm) with a flat torque pattern from around 1800rpm to just shy of 4000 rpm

Thats about $6.20 per Kw

It also sits the TD5 right in the torque band off the line, and holds it there - allowing a much better acceleration curve especially when loaded.

And it still does sub 10l/100km...

The only drinking being done is by the V8
