Howdy
I bought one of these (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/DC-12V-to-5V-3A-15W-Auto-Power-Voltage-Converter-Regulator-Module-to-2-USB-Port-/261214468043?pt=AU_B_I_Electrical_Test_Equipment&hash=item3cd19877cb) and today hard wired to my aux battery for charging ipad and iphone when touring. Completed all the wiring, plug in iphone - nothing. Test usb-iphone cable on computer to check that is not the source of the problem - its not. Change usb-iphone cable just to be sure, same result. Go and get i-pad - same, nothing.
Plug in a HTC, charges no problem. What the....
Seems that there is something about the way apple has designed the iphone and ipad that makes charging from some powered USB ports problematic.
I have removed the cigarette lighter socket, and so I'm not interested in Ciggy Lighter USB outlets. Perhaps I'm going to have the go for something like this... Say goodbye to big, chunky power plugs (http://www.baintech.com.au/usbrange) - costs a lot more, but I guess if it works....
Any other suggestions?

I mounted a dual one in to the dash on my 110 instead of the cigarette lighter same as the blue one you have put the link for
I got mine of eBay and works great with the iPad and iPhone.

G'day mate.
I am led to believe Apple added a little feature in its' latest update.
The devices now ignore ALLnon-apple add ons such as battery packs etc, cool eh?
My car charger is also junk now :mad:

Does that mean the Baintech stuff won't work either?

Mine wouldn't work with an add-on battery pack but charges ok from the accessory socket.I was told that Apple have done this. Jim

Latest Apple iPad and iPhone need 2.1 Amp to charge. The latest 240v to usb charger has a 12W output but the old one was 10W. So as long as the USB output is OK it should charge.

I bought a dual usb plug to run my ipad and my tomtom. Then two outlets are rated differently. Use the higher power outlet for the ipad. Works well

I have not had this problems. I have a iPhone 5 with the latest software.
I also have a few gadgets and one is an eBay charging case and this still works as well as other chargers

The ebay cable says its 3A max, so should be ok. I think there is more to it....

My iPhone Charger is 2.1A @ 5V - so this DC-DC converter with 5V USB output should charge it right?

Then there is the possibility that the power ratings (current) may be....optimistic.
- The Apple stuff may require genuine, full-bodied amps, not the skinny Oriental ones...:(

According to this site there needs to be a voltage on pins 2 and 3 before an iDevice will start charging.
How to make your own iPad 2 USB Charger (DIY iPad 2 USB Charger) (http://timothyb.net/DIY_iPad_2_USB_Charger.html)
Check the update at the bottom of the page in particular as there is additional information suggesting the voltage on the data pins indicates may be used to signal the amp rating of the supply.
Also if you check out this page selling the same Fulree dual plug dc-dc converter linked in the first post
DC/DC Converter step down 12V to 5V 3A 15W Dual Female USB A Plug-in Switching Power Supply from Consumer Electronics on Aliexpress.com (http://www.aliexpress.com/item/DC-DC-Converter-step-down-12V-to-5V-3A-15W-Dual-Female-USB-A-Plug/1066304126.html)
you'll see the line
>Output voltage: 5V, 2 type A USB female Ports(for USB charging ports(can't be used for iphone).
Add:
This page has a breakdown of voltages required on the data pins for each supply rating.

I have a dual USB socket that plugs into a cigarette lighter, it has one 500mA USB and one 1000mA, the apple devices only charge on the 1000mA one.

You've been led down the garden path then.
I have a multitude of add ons and all of them function fine.
As Offtrack posted, real power is needed to run them.

I bought one of these units to power usb devices:
CPT-C5 power converter 12V/24V switch to 5V [POW01161B] - $8.50 : Seeed Studio Bazaar, Boost ideas, extend the reach (http://www.seeedstudio.com/depot/cptc5-power-converter-12v24v-switch-to-5v-p-1066.html?cPath=1_4)
I have to admit I haven't got around to installing as yet. ;) Obviously it's going to require a small amount of extra circuitry along the lines of the information above but it should handle charging two 2.1A devices without too much trouble.

Got a Belkin charger that charges my iPad in the car no problem.
FWIW I've got other car chargers that don't charge my Samsung S3 phone, need a higher rated charger there as well. It's not just Apple

See option 2 in this (http://plugable.com/2012/03/13/charging-your-ipad-or-iphone-with-a-usb-hub) link .... I haven't tested it yet but it will hopefully provide the simplest (albeit not the most ideal) solution - happy to switch it off while it charges.

It works, plug it in, turn it off, leave it to charge, wait, unplug and turn on. Charged.

I have a double USB plug that goes into the ciggy lighter in the deefer and charges both my iphone and ipad, both with the new ios. Ive been caught in the past with supplies that werent enough for the ipad. Just get the one thats rated to the ipad. It pulls more juice than you would think.

I am not sure on the iPhone 5s. But my Iphone 5 will charge quite happily via the 5w 1amp charger. Pretty sure it is the charger that came with it. Ipads used to come with 10w, but now come with 12w.
But even the current Ipad retina will charge off of a 5w charger. It just takes ages.
I am currently using a - Usams 3 1Amp High Output Dual USB CAR Charger FOR Ipad Iphone Phones GPS Tablet | eBay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/281033249883'ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649)
It charges an iphone 5 and a Sony Xerpie Z at the same time. Took both from 30-40% to full in an hour long car trip. That was with it plugged into a std Corolla ciggie plug.
I havent used it on an ipad, as I dont have one. But will check with a mate and see how it goes.
This setup works for me at the moment. But I do have a Baintech dual USB to go in my cargo system at some stage. But I dont think it is rated to 3.1amp.

I've found some panel mount USB ports, even some IP68 rated if that floats your boat. Working out a black box to run 4 USB ports at 5v/2A (expandable to 8 ports) that will have the correct loading on USB lines 2&3 so the Apple devices see the correct voltages and allows charging to start.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2013/10/696.jpgCould have USB's at the back of the vehicle, even mounted outside and have waterproof connections.
