Traveling through Alice springs and today my car started making an odd noise when I turn it off.. The car is still running fine but about a second after I turn it off it makes a noise 'wokka wokka wokka'.. A bit like a dying duck lol It's a public holiday here tomorrow so can't get it to a mechanic and am unsure if I should continue into halls creek tomorrow... Any one have any ideas..

hey sue.
I'm in Alice too atm, just arrived today off the Tanami.
maybe I'll see you around
could be the egr valve? don't own a puma but i know they do some funny valve cleaning thing on shutdown.
Hope you get it sorted

G'day Sue,
Is it a very faint sound and it goes something like chucka, chucka, chucka, chucka, chucka (that's the best way I have read that describes the sound) Just 5 times like that, no more, no less, if so it is the EGR doing its cleaning cycle and is normal. I can only hear mine if the radio is off and its pretty quiet. I generally listen for it out of habit now so I know that its actually working:eek:

Sue,
The puma cycles the egr when the motor is shut down, when they get old/sticky/dirty/just plain bung they make a noise that may be what you describe.
As for if you should keep driving, I don't know.

(Edit, you don't want to get distracted mid reply around here!)

Hey Sue, hope it's nothing terminal and the trip goes ( and is going) well otherwise. Keen to see some of your photos of your travels....
cheers

It's not a quiet noise (it's loud enough to turn heads) and it makes the noise three times (every time) but if its the EGR then it's not a show stopper by the sound of it.. :)

Mine is definitely quiet, but I have read other threads that say when they are on there way out they start to squeal, it may be on its way. It is a warranty item phew.

Does it sound like this?
Strange Engine Noise - YouTube (http://youtu.be/WoPvoSkR26Y)
Then it's the EGR.

sue, yes certainly sounds like egr valve, they can be quietened down by removing it, dismantlng and cleaning/ lubricating the mechanism inside. the factory grease soon goes hard and fails to do its job, causing the bronze bushings to make that noise. a dob of LMM grease or similar will shut it up. if you leave them too long and they seize altogether, reduced power and high fuel consumption/ limp mode may occur. i would get suttons to check it out before you go too far 'bush'.

Take an extra day in Alice and then visit Suttons on Tuesday for peace of mind.

Omg that's it!!! The video posted is definitely the same noise as mine! Sooo how hard us it to clean out myself because if I stay in Alice to get it done on Tuesday it means I will be driving the Tanami on my own (and in a hurry as I have to catch my convoy to start the Canning before they leave or I'll be doing that myself too : o)

sue, it is doable but fiddly and unless you have a 3/8" or 1/4" drive socket set and infinite patience you may be wishing you hadn't started the job:(
if you like you can call me tomorrow at work on 0408 995 635 and i can talk you through the job? if i don't get to the ph, make sure to leave a message and return number.

Stuck open the EGR will cause a slight drop in power at high speeds and very slightly increase fuel use. Stuck closed isn't an issue.
In your case it's not stuck just noisy. Mine was as per the video I recorded for several months. If it was stuck it wouldn't make the noise.

As a td5 guy I'm probably not that useful with a Puma(?) but I'm not around at the moment anyhow. Hope you get it sorted without too much drama :)

All the grey nomads will tell you it's as rough as guts...
