Hi all,
Just looking for advice from anyone that is or has had an iPad holder setup in a Disco 3, I'm looking for options as the Hema Maps are pretty reasonable priced.
Pics of a mounted iPad in the cabin would be even better if anyone has them?
An example of what I am looking at:
Universal iPad/Android Car Floor Mount - Item No: ATABFSM (http://www.camzilla.com.au/products_info/ipad-tablet-mounts__universal-ipad-android-car-floor-mount)
Thanks,
Ben

Had a mate who had one but didnt like it as he found himself forever looking down not out the windscreen!!!... Eventually found a longer bit of the flex so it was mounted more at dash height so it was less time from looking out the front window and could glance better/quicker...

Also because it was low in the cabin it took his eyes longer to adjust from bright to dark n back again....

Yeah good point, makes sense.
But wouldn't the iPad at windscreen height take up a ton of room?
Cheers,
Ben

Ben, have you got the OEM sat nav in your D3?
Some 7" tablets will fit, or i've read an ipad mini fit in the hole in the dash if you haven't.

Nope no sat nav. I have an iPad2 full size, actually if a bracket could hold it in the same position that may work.

Personally, I hate anything rattling or moving around when on the road, and that mount you linked to looks like it would do just that. I think the little cubby is the right place, as it doesn't obscure any of the windscreen and your eyes are not diverted far from the road to look at the screen.

True, what about something reasonably firm so it doesn't move?

Ben - check out Ram mounts. You can get them to bolt onto seat frame, or with multiple suction caps which attach to windscreen.

Ram mount. 3 suction cups to beat corrugations. Very solid never falls off holds the iPad rigid and very functional. Also completely removable.

I have the RAM mount that goes down to the seat bolt. Did a 2 week loop down to Alice and back, lots of dirt tracks, lots of corrugations. The mount was great. I have iPad mini on top.

I use a clickon mount which has been quite good (does not work with any covers though) all floor mounts I came across do wobble so would not get a floor mount myselfhttp://www.4sdata.net/skitch//iPhoto-20130806-124940.png

That looks like not a bad spot, is it movable/flexible so the passenger (boss) can see it too?

yes you can change angle but it's secured via a little screw

I wish I could say it was something clever, but I just turn the suction mount so that it makes a backwards L shape and then tuck it under the rubber mat, the suction cup isn't even stuck on. It stays there pretty well believe it or not, very ocassionally it swings sideways a little if you take a corner to sharply but otherwise all good.:D

hahaha, damn I was thinking you had built or found a great little holder. At the moment I am keeping my tom tom in the windscreen right bottom corner tucked out of the way.
I will try the rubber mat idea and will order an ipad mount via ram mounts. May as well, my car won't be going anywhere for a while.
Cheers,
Ben

Probably not my cup of tea, but to be fair the first video was only the rough fitout. The final install is found in part two:

A word of caution - there is an airbag in that A pillar. Anything like a GPS mounted in front of it becomes a lethal projectile in a crash.

Good point Rob, that hadn't crossed my mind, I will make sure to put it back to the centre.

I mount my GPS in the cubby at the top centre of the dash between the air vaents similar to Andrew's Tom Tom. I have cut a piece of perspex out and put velcro strips on the perspex and the bottom of the cubby. When I want to use the GPS I just remove the rubber mat and attache the perspex to the velcro. the suction cup then sticks to the perspex. Has been pretty solid so far. Just grabbed a pic. The velcor does not show up to well unfortunately.

I did think of something similar, and didn't think it would actually work, so thanks I'll give that a shot.
What some of the guys in the UK have done is get the RRS sat nav surround and put a tomtom/navman into that position and wire it into the back as a permanent fixture, I did think of trying this but I like the storage spot for driving to work.

I've got a RAM suction mount on the centre of the windscreen (to avoid the side air bags) for a 7" GPS. Been there for >2 years and never fallen off.
RAM have a mount that expands into the cupholder. Might be the go?

I recently installed a RAM mount for an IPad Mini in the D3.
The parts I purchased from Mr Mobile (http://www.mrmobile.net.au/ram-mounts/ipad-mini-and-7-tablet-mounts) was the RAM TAB-TITE Cradle, The short double clamp and a diamond and a square base with 1" ball.
I made a piece of perspex to fit in the cubby and screwed it in on a downward incline with the square base attached. The picture below shows the square base and ball attached to the perspex in the cubby.

Then its a simple matter of attaching the short arm and the Tab Tite holder.
63917
Here's the finished product when the iPad is inserted
63918
I also made the Aux mod to the car and placed the 3.5 mm stereo jack next to the ciggie lighter socket which has a mini USB converter installed - So a 30 pin to USB and 3.5mm audio stereo cable and an apple Lightning to 30 pin adapter completes the setup.
All up I think it looks fairly neat.

Thanks. I'm fairly pleased.
A note for anyone looking at the RAM cradles for iPad Mini. There are two basic types. One type is very slimline fitting the iPad like a glove - but does not allow the iPad to have any cover/case/protector. If you choose this type you'll need to remove the cover before placement, and then put the cover back on when you take it out.
The other type is the TAB-TITE. The one shown in the picture. It has quite large end clamps which whilst not a slim looking can cater for a very bulky iPad cover, meaning that you don't need to take the cover on and off all the time.

I am thinking I will salary sacrifice an iPad mini and go the same route, I am pretty keen on getting a similar setup, and personally the full size iPad is a bit big for the cabin in my opinion.

Make sure you get the iPad Mini with the internal GPS. The WiFi only one has no GPS.

On the weekend I had a crack at making a holder for my Galaxy Tab and it seems to have worked out OK.
Made from 12mm ply, it is restrained above the existing info display by an angle that hooks under the dash upholstery and at the back of the unit (toward the front of the car), it is zipped tied to the demister vent.
The only thing I had to buy was the rubber channel to protect the dash. The rest of the materials were already laying around in the shed.
The zip tie fixing may be up graded in version 2 but I may also learn to live with it
