HI GUYS I have got a 110 defender .TD5 and the clutch is really getting soft also it feels like there is only a quarter of clutch to press . The clutch doesn't slip at all ,is it an issue of just bleeding the clutch if you can or is it a mechanical problem . Can some one give me some advice please !!

A clutch is a clutch. Pump the pedal hard for several times and then hold the pressure. If the pedal fades down time to look further. There should be a dust cover on the front of the slave cylinder. Ease that back and check for leaking. Should be one on the master as well and do the same. If the clutch is lossing pressure then the fluid is either by passing the master or leaking some where. If it is not leaking then it it is most likely the master cylinder because if it bypasses the slave cylinder it is leaking.

Is the pedal arm moist with fluid. thats a giveaway for hydraulic problems . The Defender master cylinders give the most trouble, I'd be looking there first.

Normally the slave goes before the master. Slave going normally makes it feel like the biting point of the clutch is disappearing into the engine bay.

The slave is in the bell housing. The master on the bulkhead.

Agree totally, slave cylinders seem more prone to failure than master cylinders. Check your level, if its low you'll either have fluid at the pedal or from the bell housing. If it's the slave be careful taking it off as the plastic clip can pull out of the clutch arm, I usually withdraw the slave as slowly as possible until I can get a pair of long nose pliers to hold the push rod before completely removing the cylinder. Good luck either way.:)

I had the same problem on my 2000 TD5.
Had no free play at all , was not loosing any clutch fluid, bleeding master cylinder and slave cylinder did not help.
The problem was the master cylinder was pressurising the master cylinder and no pressure going to the slave cylinder.
Had the clutch master cylinder and slave changed, fresh clutch fluid and it is the best clutch it has ever been.
I was surprised how cheap the parts where also.
