I have read lots of threads about the poor brakes on the disco's.I was less than impressed with mine when I bought it,with new pads having been fitted by the previous owner. I have to admit to putting up with them for the last few years but in recent time they had become worse to the point of pathetic.I picked up a set of TRW pads for the front and back and changed them out last weekend and the difference is incredible. No more "wooden" feeling pedal they now have heaps of bite with a very progressive feel.Previously I could not lock up the wheels on a dry road ,now its really easy to get the ABS to fire.
I don't know what brand the old pads were as the numbers were difficult to read but I suspect they were a heavy duty compound as they still has a fair bit of wear left in them for their age.
Hopefully this helps others with similar issues its probably the best 2 hrs and $120 I have spent on it.:)

most likely they were a low dust compound that had glazed up.

since they outlawed asbestos in brakes as a very very rough rule of thumb pads that dont dust up generally dont brake as well and glaze up really easily but last an age.

Yep that sums it up in a nutshell ,old pads were very glazed and never had any dust.

Trw are great tis why I recommend them for disc brake landys. I have seen bentdix 4wd in tojos nissans and landys and they just don't work we'll. we use Queensland friction material (very low dust) in comodores falcons ect and they work well but I don't like there 4wd compound much I'm useing there standard compound in my fender and they work well till they get hot

Non-ABS discos are still ok with bendix 4wd pads. Have not changed my pads for the last 8 years. Due soon I think, have not had the wheels off for a while so not sure.
