Might be easier - to just buy a new radio.

I wonder what the problem is with giving out a code for a car radio worth less then 20 bucks... or why they hove codes in the first place

Depending on what radio is installed the dealer may not be able to provide you with the radio code as a number of the companys have ceased trading. If it is a Eurovox radio you will need to contact a company called Go Technologies Ph. 03 9237-0800 you will need the model number and the serial number off the back of the radio and costs $22. There is a form on there web site that you can fax to them.

You obviously don't have the original books either.
Personally I'd be getting a new radio, the sound quality isn't great from the old Eurovox radio, but they have a decent range and as already said, would be worth $20 at the most.

Once you have the code the procedure is totally straight forward.

My '95 came with the original handbook & a small plastic card (about the size of a credit card) with the radio code on it.
I have a feeling that if you enter a code incorrectly a few times there is a long delay before you can try it again otherwise you could have 10,000 tries at getting it right.....

If the radio was OK it might be worthwhile persevering with an LR dealer to see if they can find the code, I can scan the relevant page in the handbook if you need it.

As Gromit says, there was originally a card in the handbook folder with the code.

Are the LEDs still working? In my last Tdi they, slowly but surely stopped working from right to left, first buttons and then the screen. I installed a spare head unit and 4 inch speakers I had lying around. The difference in sound quality was astonishing. Have a look on the throw-out table at your nearest JB Hi-Fi ;).

About 6 years ago, when I approached a dealer to get the code for my 1995 130, I was told there was no such VIN number, after much toing and froing the age of the car was worked out and I was laughed at and told that they don't have any info for such old cars. Not even the VIN number:eek:
It was only about 10 or 11 at the time.
I've never been back to a dealer.

BTW I did get the code from the PO, it was not worth the effort, get a better radio.

Oh how I laughed. I love the "frank-ness".

Problem is you'll only be able to hear how much better it is with the engine switched off.
I considered changing mine but it works well enough for the noise level in a Defender.......

I know there are many contributing factors, but I actually found this not to be the case. The original radio and speakers were very "muffled", which seemed to be drowned out worse by the engine and road noise compared to the crisper, clearer sound that the newer system I installed gave. This was in a single cab, so as I said that could be a very different case to other body styles, what you have between the front seats (seat, box, etc), or levels of insulation, etc.

I got the code but its four digits and they said you just enter it... mine appears to be 3 digits, with a 1 in the left hand corner it wants the first digit, then a 2 appears,, think its going in the bin.

what is the easiest way to remove it as i don't have the correct tools/key?

Don't throw it away, I'll send you the postage......

When you turn it on a '1' appears in the display.
Via the 6 preset buttons enter the 4 digit code. As each number is entered, the number will be displayed in the LCD.
Then after a few seconds, hey presto the radio comes on.

If you enter incorrectly a '2' appears in the display. Do it incorrectly again and a '3' appears. Incorrectly again and '---' appears. You now have to leave the radio powered up for 1 hour before you can try again.

Best of luck.
