Series 3 Gearbox Overhaul

Hi all

Can anyone recommend a suitable Perth outfit to overhaul a knackered S3 gearbox. Was going to tackle it myself but its lain there for months and I am no closer to starting.

Any older Land Rover specialist (older cars not age of the specialist) should be able to do it for you but depending on what needs to be done it isn't cheap.
Someone I spoke to in Melbourne a while ago paid $2,500 for a full rebuild. That is normally a strip down, clean, replace worn/broken parts and rebuild.

I shipped out a rebuild kit from the UK PSK 1024 REP - Overhaul Kit, Series 3 Gearbox, Replacement specification (http://www.pegasusparts.co.uk/ourshop_90073/prod_1762115-PSK-1024-REP-Overhaul-Kit-Series-3-Gearbox-Replacement-specification.html) didn't use it (but hanging on to it for the next project). Bearings are 'no-name'.

What exactly is wrong with your gearbox ?

I'm about to try and rebuild one myself :eek: I now have a huge pile of bits on the garage floor and am wondering if it will ever work again :D

I spotted a $300 overhaul kit on ebay and am going to use that, I'm pretty sure the gearbox was okay before I took it apart so fingers crossed.

The gearbox in my dormobile is now jumping out of gear and losing huge amounts of oil so I don't think it will last much longer.

Check out the overhaul kit from the UK.
80GBP plus maybe 45GBP freight would be about $220 to your door.
I did have some problems with the delivery but very happy once it all arrived. They only accept Paypal, didn't have credit card facilities when I purchased.
It seems to contain more that the local kits I've found but the bearings are no-name.

If your box is jumping out of gear you may need more than just a rebuild kit........

Hello All,

Here is a scenario - Firstly I am not a mechanic.

A person has a collection of gearboxes which have been taken off various Series 3 vehicles over a period of time. Some have been removed from the vehicles some time since the 1970s. Other gearboxes are still sitting in chassis however they have had the engines and clutches removed. This means I am unable to depress the clutch to select different gears or take the vehicle for a spin. Some gearboxes have selector levers that are locked in place, while other gearboxes have no selectors at all. The thing the boxes have in common is that they are all "history unknown".

What checks and procedures can be done to separate the good gearboxes from the not so good ones - without pulling the boxes apart?

If given the opportunity to take off some inspection plates what things should I look out for - apart from bits of teeth being missing from the gears and lots of shrapnel in the oil what are the checks and procedures that could be performed to further select a serviceable gearbox from one that needs a major overhaul?

Were there any differences between gearboxes and clutches for the:
6 cylinder 2.6 litre petrol motor;
the 4 cylinder 2.25 litre petrol motor; or the
4 cylinder 2.25 diesel motor?

If there are differences in these gearbox to engine configuration/fuel match what serial number on the gearboxes would tell me what box goes with what motor?

I'm no pro on this, but the gearboxes were all the same, engine was irrelevant. BUT the 6cyl had a different stud pattern on the bell housing. and a different shape gear lever.

Sorry I can't help on condition...
