Ive had the rear universal joint on the front drive shaft explode and destroy two of the four bolts (threads) and want to replace them but can't for the lift of me get the nut that connects the flange to the transfer box off to do so.
Any ideas or tips would be appreciated. Sorry it's a 98 300Tdi manual not sure if it makes a difference

Im not sure if its staked or not? Engage the CDL. You might get it with a breaker bar and socket with someone holding the brake on for you. Or if you havnt got an air rattle gun you might be able to hire an electric one?

To stop the flange from spinning and without stressing the gears, I use a piece of flat steel bar, roughly 25x6mm by about 300mm long, drilled to match two of the bolts on the flange. Bolted up, this locks against the body or chassis rails depending if its diff or TC - that way I can use a breaker bar and socket on the flange nut without any problem.

While you have the flange off might as well replace the seal.
