Hi there folks.
I've taken to sifting through large quantities of TV shows and movies as of late to entertain myself while I wait for the expo and glenreagh, and it's got me thinking.
A good theme/intro/soundtrack can really make the difference between an okay film/tv show and an excellent one.
For example, the other night I watched the re-make of The Italian Job. Soundtrack to that set it up perfectly, lots of fast paced music.
Similarly, the Blade films have excellent soundtracks, nothing sets up vampire mass murder like 90s hard techno :D
Also I think the Tv shows Game of Thrones, Dexter, and Underbelly have themes that are perfectly suited to the shows.
And of course, we have the 007 theme :D
So, what's your favourite movie soundtrack/ tv show theme?
Cheers

You are quite right there DM. For example, "A Perfect Storm". A pretty poor flick made watchable with a score from James Horner. Another Horner soundtrack was "Windtalkers".
I love movie soundtracks. The "Star Wars" soundtracks by John Williams are one of my favourites. I also have a collection of James Bonds on vinyl.
Oh, the firs soundtrack that started my collection was "The Jungle Book".

There are so many movie soundtracks that are very memorable. One being the Indiana Jones series, another piece of John Williams magic.

The one that sticks out for me is the Underbelly theme - perfectly suited to a slightly gritty look on the murkey world of Mafia linked crime.

The themes from "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" series of films by Ennio Morricone always stick in my mind. Instantly recognisable. Also the music in Blade Runner by Vangelis. Added a huge amount of atmosphere to the film.
However, the soundtrack from The Blues Brothers is a good call, Muppet. :D

Ah, yes. Good call. He also scored "Once Upon a Time in America". Another good one.
He also scored "The Mission" which is touted as the best movie soundtrack of all time.

Agree. Both instantly recognisable. For "Mission Impossible", you could play that bit of music and probably 90% of the population would recognise it and be able to name it.
Following my Vangelis theme....the Chariots of Fire theme?

That's the one! I could have just Googled it, but I knew someone would know exactly what it was called, and who wrote it.
Looking back at my posts, it seems all my choices are 20+ years old. Does that mean no good movies soundtracks have been released in the last 2 decades.

Nah. I've watched a few films that have been MA15+ in violent/offensive content on Qantas flights. Understandably, they don't play anything with huge amounts of nudity or sex, but a bit of blood and guts is fair play.

Mike Post was rather prolific when it comes to TV themes. I remember the "Hill Street Blues" theme. Other notable themes he composed were "The Rockford Files", "Murder One" (with Aussie actor Anthony LaPaglia), "NYPD Blue", "The Greatest American Hero", "Quantum Leap" and "Law & Order".
All TV shows I watched and enjoyed.

Gold! Marvellous soundtrack. The movie wouldn't have been the success it was without it.
Just looking at the movies in my movie collection, what about "The Deer Hunter"?
John Williams (a different John Williams, the Australian guitarist John Williams) playing Stanley Myers' "Cavatina" (also known as The Theme From The Deer Hunter). I would have said haunting but that may be a little strong.

Love The Doors. Thought the use of "Ride of the Valkyries" was excellent but I think the movie was so good it stood up on it's own without the soundtrack.
Saturday Night Fever would have been rubbish without the Bee Gees.

I'd argue the movie, while good on it's on, was made into the cult classic that it is through the clever music it featured.
Black Hawk Down also had some excellent music in it.
James Newton Howards score for Blood Diamond was also top notch

I completely agree with Blues Brothers, Rocky Horror and Apocalypse Now. We played the Flight Of The Valkyries at Oakey when the Huey's arrived at Oakey from Canberra when we stole them off the RAAF. My all time favorite soundtrack will always be Topgun. Eddie and The Cruisers gets an honorable mention though.

I believe Wayne Gardner was listening to this on his walkman before going out and winning the race that clinched him the world title in 1987.

I saw it at, IIRC, the Regent in Melb. The theme played before the curtains opened. Astonishing piece of theatre in those days. I went with the RROC, as the armoured cars were RRs, and that club was like that. Not like REMLR or those types of clubs at all....

REMLR is not a club. Have you confused this with another organisation?
I would love to see "Lawrence of Arabia' on the big screen again. Cinema 1, Regent Theatre, Ballarat would be a good location. One of my favourite cinemas.

No. I am aware that it is not a club, per se. However, those involved appear to be like minded. It was tongue in cheek, Mr Marsh. I am trying to keep my sense of humour alive. Currently it is on life support, but I have hope.

You would need an old school projectionist, or at least one who has learned from one. The business of playing the theme prior to the curtains opening has stuck with me for.... must be nigh on 50 years. The film also requires an interval with choc ices. Maybe the Astor?

They showed the remastered edition recently in 70mm here in Melbourne - Yes John, at the Astor. They had a 70mm festival over 4 days. I was away that weekend or I would have gone myself. Did watch it twice on Netflix the following weekend though, the remastered version brings it back to life as I’d only ever seen the dodgy print the TV stations have been using for years... 👍😊
