Hi All,
I recently purchased a 96 TDi. Had my first mishap with the serpentine belt and A/c belt went today. Will need to replace it tomorrow (Sunday) as I can't be without it, this week or all weeks.
I'm a newbie to this and game to give it a bash, BUT wondering if there are any on the forum who live close to Wellington Point in Brissie, who might be good enough to lend me some time and expertise to give me a hand.
I would be very grateful!
Can you PM if you can help.
Thanks

1/ remove the top radiator cowl.
2/ with the appropriate sized ring spanner put tension on the tensioner pulley next to the alternator
3/ with appropriate naughty words and grunts increase tension until the serpentine belt has enough slack to slide off the other pulleys
4/ wiggle it.
5/ using fresh naughty words, reverse the process
6/ refit the cowl and switch on listening for embuggerances.
7/ pat self on back

Make sure you have the correct belt as there are 2 different length belts for the 300 tdi engines, but not sure when the change was made.

By the way, is it a Defender or Discovery?

It's a disco.
I am aware of the 2 different lengths. I have bought a 7pk1580.
I'll pull the belts off first thing in the morning and double check I have the right one. But need to get the other belt which runs to the a/c unit, as that's showing signs of wear too.
I've you-tubed and found vids on replacing the main serpentine belt which seems straight forward (so says the newbie).
But not sure how the manual tensioner works on the ac belt, though. I presume I have to loosen the 3 bolts on the outer end of the arm but if any one has a link to a vid or advice on the manual tensioner that would be greatly received.
Thanks

Loosen the 3 bolts and place a breaker bar square end in the hole provided and rotate to loosen and tighten the belt, when correct tension is reached hold position with breaker bar and tighten the 3 locking bolts, Regards Frank.

Thanks Tank.
Belts are now off and waiting for Repco to open. Hoping they have the comppressor belt somewhere in stock.
However, when loosening the first (left most bolt) on the manual tensioner, I knocked a coolant system hose and coolant started spewing everywhere. When I checked I have broken, a small (4cm diameter) housing/distributor that has a single slightly larger hose on the bottom and two smaller hoses at the top.
First off, what is that called?
Second, are they a universal part for all cars or landy's or specific to a 300tdi?
Thanks.

Looking through the Disco manual I found last night the smaller hoses I talked about are the purge hoses from the thermostat and radiator which feed back into the header tank. If that helps anyone.
But still can't find any mention of what this part is called?

Thanks Dave.
Yeah I do need it urgently, I need the car all this week for work, hence me trying to do this myself.
Just saw you were in Ipswich, if you could find the vactuatur today I would be so so so grateful!!!!!!!
I've replaced both belts now. So original problem fixed.
Now must fix the problem I caused. Urgh!

mines no good, its got a nasty looking split in it where its supposed to be pressed together.
for a short term fix you can use a 1/4 inch t Piece and some hose clamps.

Its a jet pump for removing air from the radiator. Basically it auto bleeds your entire cooling system all the time while you drive. A tee piece won't have the same effect but you can manually fill the rad via the filling bung. Anyways its a 5/16 brass tee you need to use not a 1/4. Or just buy a new plastic thingy, I believe they aren't that dear, complete with the three hoses.

So realy once its primed and all the air is out it should be fine to have the brass fitting? Once its filled and running I loosen the bung on the tstat housing and the air normally passes out there
