Unbelievable! Why on earth wouldn't they they just stand off the coast and wait for the seas to settle. Does anyone know if they managed to get in?
Cheers

According to the quotes on the YouTube vid (including a repost by the NZHerald), all ended well.

Nothing like a long lens and appropriate angle to increase the visual impact...

Looks like they were just waiting for the right wave set to get over what looks like a pretty tricky sandbar.
That's what "local knowledge" is all about.

I think it is Graymouth that has a reputation as such a bar.
As for the comment about boat handling I think they are doing all they can.
The waves pick you up and "have their way" with you
I have crossed a few in my time
Note the broken stabilizer on the starboard side. That can be a worry with the other still in the water. (pull to one side.)
Good shots and a bit goulish to be watching for a disaster but that is human nature.
Make fish look REAL cheap when you see it in the shops!

As per normal your absolutely correct Superquag ...it is all trick photography and the swell was only 2 foot peaking at 3 feet. ...:Rolling::Rolling::Rolling::Rolling:
Yeah right ...
PS ...I heard it was just a case of them wanting to get home to watch the Bledisloe Cup ...;)

I have been over that bar a few times when I was in the NZ Navy on patrol craft, there is about 8-10 knots of current flowing out of the river mouth on a flood tide or in periods of heavy rain in the mountains, and these boats can probably do that at full power, so they seem to rely on surfing down the waves to make ground and 'mark time' in between the swells. The Grey river bar is one of the most treacherous bars in the country, the pubs on the wharf had a similar reputation back in the '80s as well! But if you have $100,000 of Crayfish on board for the Asian markets and a helicopter standing by to fly it to Christchurch and on to a commercial flight to Tokyo, you,d probably have a run at it too.
These skippers and crews were/are tough buggers and believe it or not, most of them know what they are doing. I have stood where the camera was and watched them come in and thought 'stuff that' its really butt clenching watching, let alone being on board.

Just another day at the office for those blokes, they would not have been concerned one bit. They are professional fishermen, it's their job. And they are very good at it. Same the World over, nothing special about them, Bob
