A mate of mine that is picky on anything thats not to spec was over the other day and mentioned there was a dip in my floor. It's pretty minor but Im laying large tiles in the area. So I bought a laser level on a tripod.
The good lady looked at me when I took it out of the box and I could hear saying to herself, not another toy.
Yesterday I got under the house and set the beam ( it has auto levelling ) to the top of the stumps, the spread of beam has right angle beams also, every stump top in that beam range was spot on except 3. these were I could pack with some slices of wood.

We need to carry out some more renos so I reckon it'll get some good use. Now since I have one, it's one of those " how did I ever do without one"
Yearts ago I installed new stumps and used a hose with water as a level, but I could only line up one at a time, These Lasers allow multiple levelling.

they're good fun to play with in the dark too.. they make great patterns on trees and rocks around my place .....

The ultra sonic measuring sevices I can remember when the first came out and a chap I worked with in the floor covering industry used one to measure and quote for a house lot of carpet. When the carpet layers arrived to install the carpet they found that each room was aprrox a metre short, not a square metre, but the broadloom metre which is 1 m x 3.66m. The owner of the business told him to stop with the gadgets and use the proven tape measure method. He wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed with driving a tape measure. He had the gift of the gab for selling the product, but they ended up getting some one else to measure his jobs.

We use them to set out whole house floors or decking frames, saves a ton of time :D

Decking an other project for another day, pour concrete, place stumps, when cured use the laser on stumps and saw them of at correct level. Quicker than a string line and no need for a hanging/sliding level and string tawtness.

or you could dig the holes, frame the whole deck up(no decking at this stage) including the posts/supports floating in the holes with temp props/wedges/packers under the frame and then concrete in. It removes the need for string lines and plumbing/leveling and supporting the posts in the wet concrete and having to trim to height.

Now lets not get too carried away now,:D I'm talking a one man show here.
Checked out the local hire place for future reference on a ride on post hole digger, getting to old and lazy for hand shovels or those hand held hole drills.

last deck I built myself was 10m long and 4m wide. Its not the size but the height above ground. Even then its fairly easy as 9/10 times a deck is attached to a house so you have a solid, fixed starting referrence point.

That's the way we do our bearers, attach the stumps to the bearers, suspend them at the right height with the laser, bang in the concrete and youre done.

We used to string out the whole deck and then use spirit levels all the way.:(
