Yep, it's illegal if the kid is under 16.
I don't care if you smoke, even around me.
But around kids is a different story...

Bit rich coming from a member who's named "weeds" :D, seriously anyone who smokes should be no where near kids at all when they light up.

Too bloody right it is, I reckon there should be a 100m exclusion zone around me as well, I just about have to break out the ventolin when I smell smoke , ....... including campfire smoke
feeding kids maccas and fast food should be illegal too, not that I'm any example as I could do with dropping 15kg.

That's the thing though, and it's countered in the same way by people who think alcohol should be banned full stop.
A bit of maccas or something every once in a while isn't going to do a whole lot of damage, same as a drink every now and then. There's not a safe level of smoking, there's no benefit in it whatsoever.
But yes, if you're stuffing your kids with rubbish every week (i.e to excess) then yeah, that's an issue.

there is also no safe level of passive smoking.

Bloody hate the things at the best of times.
Never have personally, but the wife does, says she's going to stop... Eventually...
Asides being pretty rancid the fact that they're around $12 AUS a pack (which she gets though in a day) is as bad, if not worse.
We could run a couple of gassed V8's quite comfortably if the money wasn't being burnt on fags...

My dad died of the filthy things at the age of 52 but my brothers and I all went through the smoking thing.
I stared at 16 and blame the bloke in the tool room I did part of my apprenticeship in, gave it up when on Bougainville Island in 1976 when doing 70 a day and feeling sick from them....only 55cents a packet then but cheap or expensive they still kill you and make you stink.
Elder bro gave it up just after I came to Oz in '72 and younger bro immediately a few years ago when diagnosed with emphysema.
Now I have to walk through a fog of smoke to get into my favourite bar because the builders oiks all stand just outside the doors having a puff.
And we have to sit a long way from the doors because the stinking smoke still comes inside.
Woman up the road takes the kids to school with a fag in her mouth but the windows open so she obviously thinks that's alright then!!!
I don't know what the answer is as it's a terrible thing to give up and our weak as **** pollies aren't going to upset the voters by banning the crap completely....or lose the revenue it raises.

But it won't.
The Govt. makes far too much money from it, despite the impact it has on health care costs.
Personally I don't really think it should be banned, if you want to go ahead, but respect other peoples choices not to.
It's the same as any drug, you can educate, tax, and campaign against it all you like, people will still do it.

I am a smoker, I would never smoke in a car with kids, or anyone else. It's my bad habit, don't need to share it around.
I think making it illegal should be phased in to protect the kids from ever having a chance to become addicted.
Going to see a hypnotist tomorrow to see if I can break the habit.

It's well known that prohibition does not work. Let's face it, there are still illegal drugs getting in to the country, so banning smoking will not work. But making it as expensive and undesirable as possible will eventually get the message home.

Perhaps.
As long as there is a demand for it, people will find a way to make money from it.
And given the addictive nature of it, it's a bit more difficult to fully stop.

Lets be honest........if you want to inhale toxic fumes why make a Tobacco Company rich.......just inhale exhaust fumes!

I bet only a very small percentage of tobacco company execs smoke their own products.
But I'll also bet everyone of them would deny that smoking is addictive and highly dangerous and makes you stink.:D

I always hate seeing a lighted cigarette thrown out of a car window-- even if it is not Bush Fire Season.

The Mrs has tried to stop several times, her Brother doesn't think she should (I reckon it's because he hasn't the wherewithal to stop himself) so has been ignorant enough on occasion to come and blow smoke in her face as he knows she'll give in and start again.
Saying that, the last time round she'd been off em for about 4 weeks and decided she 'needed' a fag after seeing her ex (maliciously) drive his car into me. Then followed another, and another, and back to the start again...
If I was going to argue the point, I was the one hit by the damn thing and I didn't feel the need for one, although I've never smoked in the first place.

My wife gave up for 4 months, then the stress (as she put it) of her parents imminent arrival put her back onto it. Her mother is a real chain smoker, and for some reason (that I don't understand apparently because I've never smoked) even the thought of having her mother there made her give in.

I think the big issue is most people expect to fail the first 2 or even 20 times they try to quit.
As such, they think "Bugger it, I've got a few more goes before I call it quits".
And John I'd agree, although I think I remember Bushie pointing out that modern cigarettes have to be actively smoked to keep them lit.
Smoking is bad enough, when you're a nob about it is even worse.
