Hi all,

I have checked a few threads and I do appologise as the comparison between oil/foam/paper has been done to death,

The help I need is which of the preferred filter do I get, the prices can vary up to 2 or 3 times across different brands

I do mostly on road travelling to the city with the occasional off road stint.

Seems paper is the way to go with most people against the foam or performance style due to the ability to catch the dust and moisture if it does get through - but please correct me if this is not correct, always open to other experience and feedback as I have very little experience with LR's.

I spent my child hood racing and riding moto's so I was always a huge fan of a good foam filter with the right oil, and then into car and road bike age k&n or unifilter or hks itg etc etc.

So, considering most threads lead to a paper filter as the way to go, which brand:
Ryco?
OEM?
Bearmach?
Mahle?

Anymore that are better, as in best value/longevity for the price?

Had a stint with K&N on a D2 and Unifilter on my Patrol. K&N did not filter well in dusty environments, unifilter does. But unifilter, no matter how much oil you squeeze out, let traces of oil onto vital sensors causing issues.

I now only use good ole Ryco and change it regularly....only about $30 each on my D4.

Thanks Brett,

Who do you get your Ryco's through?

I bought a AFE high flow air filter for my new ride through Amazon.
You could google them and see if they have one for the 2.7Lt.

Have used K&N filters before, but have been warned off them because of the dust /oil factor.

Cheers, Craig

We use the OE paper filter, still under warranty, but it's cheap anyway so I'm happy to continue to use it.

As my mechanic points out, the paper filters aren't that expensive, throw a spare in the back. Who wants to try and clean and reoil a foam old filter in the bush if you have been in a dusty environment. Just put a new one in and go.

Get a deal on a bulk buy of filters, and if you're going somewhere particularly dusty, just have a couple to stick in the spares bag. Cheap insurance I'd have thought.

I bought a non-genuine filter for my D2 but threw it away when I saw that it had less folds therefore less paper than the LR versions. I was going through filters every 10K at the time so was looking for something cheaper. A snorkel fixed the continually dirty filter problem and the D4 got a snorkel for the same reason.
