I've got a Front Runner Gas Bottle Carrier but I've been having trouble finding a gas bottle that's the right size. I've tried BCF, SuperCheap, BBQs Galore and Bunnings. Most of the cylinders are too fat to fit in the holder.
Has anyone found a source of gas bottles the correct size or modified the carrier to accommodate local bottle sizes?

Can't help with a specific bottle size that will fit but I can tell you that a lot of the manufacturers appear to change the dimensions of their bottles every couple of years or so.
I found this out while chasing a particular dimension (to match my existing) 2kg Primus bottle. Moral of the story is don't stop looking - even consider second hand coz the size you need might have been more widely available a couple of years ago (and might be common again in a few years time).

Its because its South African type, they dont suit the bottles here too well.

Older cylinders may fit. As said 2kg and 4-4.5kg cylinders have changed dimensions over the years. I had to look for bit to find a holder to put my 4.5kg primus cylinder in and did eventually find one. Now do not carry them that small just carry 8.5kg cylinders that used to be 9kg but were changed for a combination of reasons including less gas more profit and carrying a cylinder 9kg or over inside a vehicle is illegal.

I use an Outdoor Connection 3.3 kg bottle (see Gas Cylinders LH (http://www.outdoorconnection.com.au/gas-equipment/gas-cylinders/gas-cylinders.html)). I needed to move the fixing on the Front Runner carrier back a little and I have also placed some thin padding around the bottle to get a nice tight fit.

Thanks to all who replied.
Looks like I'll be off to my local swap 'n' go with a tape measure!
If that fails I'll look at a minor modification to the carrier.

I got mine from Daniel at Mulgo and he just made a new strap to go around the swap and go bottles and included it with it when sold.

My gas bottle is 4.5kg one and fits nicely in the Mulgo rack. Not sure of the brand of the bottle though. The Mulgo gas bottle rack came with two options for the "strap" (curved steel band). I'll have a look and get the manufacturer and model for you, as well as confirm which of the optional straps I use to latch the bottle into the rack.

If I can't find the perfect size bottle at Swap'n'go then I was thinking about either making up a new strap or moving the catch. A new strap might be the easier option.

My carrier is identical to yours and came with 2 straps. Both straps are too small for my 4Kg bottle and both are too large for my 2Kg bottle!

Thanks Liam. The circumferences are approximately 725mm to suit the shorter strap or 775mm for the longer strap. I've just bought a gas bottle from BigW that appears to be in the ball park, so as soon as I get a chance I'll check it to see if it is actually the correct size or not.

I have the small and large Frontrunner gas bottle holders. The Manchester branded 2kg, and 4kg bottles are pretty much a perfect fit for these holders. They were purchased some time ago, and I think it was from K MART or BigW. one of these two.

John, I have an old 4kg with 725mm circ, needs a retest as 97 expires but believe can be done cheap. Gasmate brand.
All yours if you want it. :)

I finally got around to finishing this off this weekend. The 4Kg CampMaster cylinder from Big W fits with the smaller of the two straps that come with the carrier. The latch is adjustable and it just required a minor adjustment to snugly fit the cylinder. Case closed! Thanks to everyone for sharing your experience, advice and offers.

Hi, need clarity re using say a Front Runner gas bottle holder on the rear of my Defender ute box--I have seen a number mounted on the rear panels of Defender wagons but is that legal or not? I previously had one mounted on the rear of my 101 motorhome and that was ok, but now people seem to say you can not have a bottle (small up to 4ks) mounted at the rear at all. I know some carry on roof racks but my question is re the rear of say a wagon, or the rear of a slideon type box/canopy.
Thanks,Alan
