Judder in drive at standstill- auto or timing?

G'day all,

I've recently replaced my transmission with a 2nd hand box which is changing gears perfectly but I have this annoying judder whenever I stop and leave it in drive.

Ever since I did the head gasket about 15 000 k's ago I seem to have had this problem.

I've just replaced the injectors and had high hopes that would work some miracle..nope :(. Not all bad as he new injectors haved added some power and got rid of half the black smoke on start up.

I checked the timing a little while ago and found it to be advanced a bit. Could this be the cause? THe engine sounds pretty throaty under load.

I've mucked around with the tappets but that doesn't seem to fix it.

Could it be an engine mount or something like that, or should i be working on getting the timing on the fuel pump back to where the pin slots in when at tdc?

According to the ZF w/shop manual juddering/shaking when moving off in D (Drive) is a damaged "A" clutch, solution "Repair gearbox" (very helpful).
But as you are saying it is shaking when stationary, I would be looking for something unbalanced, first I would check that the bolts/nuts holding the torque conv. to the flex-plate (auto flywheel) are tight and no damage to the flex-plate, and don't laugh check the G/box bellhousing to engine bolts are all there and tight.
Second I would check that the front engine crank pulley/dampner is tight and not wobbling around. Would also take off the serpentine belt and see if the shaking stops, could be the fan or one of the ancillaries, good luck, Regards Frank.

Thanks for the feedback. I hope it isn't a problem in the gearbox! There is no problem when moving off, just when stationary in drive or reverse. Just a bit of a minor shake going on- enough to get the back door vibrating which in itself makes it seem a lot worse (I need to get a new fitting for the dovetail thing to remove the play).
I'll try taking the belt off and see if that helps. I have noticed the tensioner moves up and down a bit. Could that be the timing doing that?
The other ancillary problem I have is that my wife has now zeroed in on how much time and money is going into the Disco! She's saying it is a false economy spending time tinkering on a car with 400k clicks on it. Talk about kicking a man when he is close to the finish line. I keep thinking if I wanted to get a nice D3 or D4 I would be parting with more than $30k and buying into the brave new world of computer managed engines...

So Mark you are saying that it is vibrating in reverse and drive while stationary.
I would be checking as I said whether the box is tightly bolted to bellhousing and engine, also drop off the small inspection plate and check the torque convertor bolts are tight and inspect (hard to do with box in vehicle) the flex plate (flywheel).
While your down there check gear box and engine mounts, Serpentine belt should move a small amount, but if it is moving say 1/2 an inch you would have something loose, Regards Frank.
