Hi,
I am looking to buy another 300tdi (had one 5 years ago) my question is.
How much should I really be paying for a 98 tdi with 200+ kms on it.
The carsguide valuation is around $5000 and the (good) ones are advertised for way more than that.
I did put down a deposit on one with only a 130kms on it, the vehicle was very tidy but not immaculate. I was then surprised to find out that Allianz will not insure it for the $9000 as it is overpriced, now they will not insure it at all even if I accept there $5000 market value.
Is this a ridiculous price to pay or are they really fetching this sort of money?
Would I be better spending this money on an early td5. Are the early horror stories all sorted now or should I steer clear.
I also did a search to locate replacement engines and there do not seem to be many around for the 300tdi but a few td5's
Sorry for the ramble but I am so confused
What are your thoughts

I bought my 98 SE7 TDI 3 years ago with 150 kms for $8000. I thought it was a bit much at the time but it has been a great car. Replaced a few things along the way but nothing out of the ordinary. Wheel bearings, power steering hoses, stuff like that. Now done 250 kms and going strong. Insured for market value so probably around $5000-$6000 I spose. I do all my own maintenance and it hasnt let me down.
They seem to be the best value 4x4.

in my limited experience. the price for replacement parts for a 300tdi seem to be quite a bit cheaper than the same for a TD5. plus an adjust of the fuel pump and bigger intercooler will get ya more more power and possibly better fuel economy?? than a standard TD5. thats my experience anyway. Id Rather pick up one for 5k and spend 5k replacing stuff then 10k and have nothing left to fix if something goes wrong.

Thanks for the super quick replies so i suppose i am right in saying then that the 130km 98 for $9000 is way too much, he is actually asking $10500 where's the best place to buy one from i have been looking everywhere and there doesn't seem to be many in Adelaide, missed out one today by a few hours stuck at work looked clean and tidy and was $4999
if anybody knows of any good ones for sale in Adelaide can you please call me 0409773661 or email reg-lisa@bigpond.com

WIthout getting into all the details of each vehicle I think you are being realistic in thinking you can get a tidy 300TDI Disco for $5k. They are getting very old now and even well maintained ones shouldn't be anywhere near $10k if you ask me. If you start talking 10 grand, you can start talking TD5 which will give you more power and just generally a newer more refined engine and vehicle.

Best of luck finding a good one in Adelaide for $5000. When I was looking (in Adelaide) $5000 would buy you someone else's pile of garbage. I was very lucky and happy to buy mine for $6000, I have since spent about $2000 fixing all the little things that were wrong with it (and lots to go yet) and another $3000 on bullbar, winch drawers etc etc. I also ended up buying another one for spare parts.

For insurance try Shannons, they insure my '95 V8 for $8000. Its worth half that. Personally i would pay up to $8000 for a very good 300tdi, but we are all different.

Just be patient and something will pop up. set up gumtree and ebay alerts on your phone if you have a smart phone. that way as soon as they are listed you can get first crack at them. worked for me. i picked up a 98 300TDI with 148k and service books from original owner with bullbar, half roof cage and lift kit for 1k. Some new bushes, oil lines, seals, windscreen and roof lining and im in probably another 2k and im roadworthy.
i will not mention anything about the rust in the passenger footwell :censored:

We bought a '98 "S" 300Tdi with genuine 170,000K's on the clock, no rust anywhere, a months rego, log books, crook tyres, and a non working clutch, (broken release fork) on EBay for $4800, drove it home 1900 Klm, have spent $1200 on tyres and clutch part and of course plus the $600 odd the state requires to use the roads, spent a bit of time, (which us retirees have a lot of), taken it up the Old Telegraph Line track once last year and about to go again.
Very happy with the old 300Tdi, particularly since it has no electronics, airbags, ABS etc, it has mechanical injection and very little anyone with a modicum of mechanical knowledge cannot fix, not the case with the Td5 I believe.
Reggie, I also contemplated paying the "big" price some are asking for these Disco's but the advice to buy the best and most original, unmolested Disco you can get for a low price and then fix it up yourself is definitely the way to go, I figured that our vehicle would only get scratched and maybe dented by using it for what it was designed for, so why go for a pristine body with half a million highway miles when I could get a not so pretty low klm unit that was not mechanically worn out.
Now we have a great reliable not so pretty beast that runs and performs both on and off road great, and the best part is the reliable 10 litres /100Klm or better fuel consumption, definitely puts a smile on my face every time I drive it.
Good hunting with your search.

i bought mine about 6 months ago with 231k on the clock for $8500. ouch! i had someone tell me that was a bit overpriced but to be fair it has a lot of aftermarket accessories that would have cost me over 8k to fit myself. i have spent about 1k on it so far fisxing little things on it as well but generally it is in very good condition.
