Hi All,
Tell me if this is suss or not really an issue..
Looking at a second hand 2010 Freelander SE TD4 with only 24,000km on clock. It's just out of warranty, and has only been serviced once at 12,000km. Thing is, to have full service history it should've had 5-6 services to now (once every 6 months as that come first before km).
Planning a pre-purchase inspection. I'm keen on it, but just nervous. Keen for your thoughts..
Cheers

If the vehicle was driven infrequently but for longer distances then the oil would not be as contaminated by fuel and moisture as if it was used often but only for very short distances. However even if the engine wear was double what it would normally be at 24K, ie equating to around 50K, is that going to be significant in the context of your intended use of the vehicle? Moisture could be a problem if this was a very cold country covered in snow for half the year, but not in Australia unless permanently at a ski resort or similar environment. Farming equipment from Canada usually has an annual oil change requirement due to moisture accumlating inside the engines and gearboxes but that's not applicable in Australia.

Thanks Graeme.
Intended use is as a daily drive for lots of combined kilometers in town and highway for work.
One mechanic I spoke to mentioned it's a longer wearing oil that is meant to be used in the FL2, something rated for 15000km. If so, servicing every 12,000km so far might still be appropriate.
I'll be sure to service it straight up and set a schedule of servicing to suit my use of the car.
Anyone have thoughts on what a HIGH service interval should be...maybe every 10,000km for oil, or don't bother?!

The current 2013 model has a service interval of 26k, this seems a long time, however I am sure at that service, it will be the cost of two anyway from any other manufacturer.
They must have found an oil that lasts even longer, I do all the normal checks as well.

I'm not sure if I'd be comfortable with a 26k service interval?! I'd propably still stick to a 10-12k interval for peace of mind!
LOL rb30gtr.. Yeah I couldn't think of anything..this came to mind. Good Mantra to live by!

I also think 26k is a big call, is in the service manual, 26k or 12 mths, I am on 18k now will service next month owned sinc feb, I suppose they have extended service to justify cost of service.

I have a 2009 FL2 and the hand book recomends 20000 k service intervals, however I have mine serviced every 10000 with the in between service being an oil and filter change only . I supply oem filters from UK to the service centre as well as my own oil (castrol magnetic profesional 5w 40) he is LR trained and has a real intrest in the vechicle and is happy to do the services that way .The oil choice is because that is what has been used in it since new and the 40 is more suited to the top end climate rather than the 30 that is recomended .

Yes, I'm thinking of setting up a similar servicing schedule to have an oil and filter change b/w more major services..say 10,000km.
Was thinking of buying Coopers Tires Zeon LTZ All-Terrain for 19" which come with a 60,000km mileage warranty. The conditions of the warranty are that the tyres are checked/rotated/balanced every 10,000km, I'm thinking these could be combined.
Thoughts on servicing schedule or this tyre (or any other tyre recommendation for 19") always welcome...

I purchased a 2012 Freelander last year and was told the service interval was 26000kms but the dealer said that most people bring them in every year for a service anyway. Mine is due now with only 8000km on the clock which I'm happy with as I kept my last Land Rover 13 years so I expect the get a payback from regular servicing later on.
Personally I think you are better off getting one that has had the service every year or every 10000kms whichever came first.

I've thought this over, and a car with only 24k on the clock and one service is ok with me. I would be more worried you will have a whining diff around 60k that isn't going to be covered by warranty. Did they fix that by 2010? Mine is an MY09 and it had the whines.
