I am off to buy a Go Pro
Any advice as to which one i should go for and any problems with them.
I want it for off roading and mounting it in the cars.
Any others bits I need with them.
And are they worth the money.

The gopro 3s are quite good.
I don't have one (have a gopro 2) but my two older brothers do and i have had a bit of a play.
The black edition will shoot at 1080p at 60fps which means you can slow it down and get some great smooth slow motion.
The others (silver and white) are lower spec but cheaper
as for problems.
everyone I have seen with problems seems have them with their computers not gopros.
Most basic pcs just can't handle 1080p at 60fps (some won't handle 1080 p anything). they freeze, the footage is jumpy or the sound oven doesn't match up with the picture.
This is only a problem when watching the raw footage how ever and once your footage has been edited and rendered (which often means cutting it back to 30/25 fps anyway) it will be silky smooth and look great.
if you have a basic comp the editing might be slow...
If you have a fairly new multimedia/gaming spec comp you may not have these problems.
One thing many people don't factor into the price of buying a gopro is the price of video editing software. without it your videos will look rubbish.
Oh and you will need (I think anyway) a class 10 sd card for the gopro 3's too so factor that into the price too
There are so many point of view cams on the market now too.
It may be worth looking at some unbiased reviews
Gopro might be top dog for marketing but that doesn't mean they are the best.

Which video editing software is recommended to use with the Go Pro ?
Ta.

I have adobe premiere elements but just about any off the self software should do what you want it to.
one program I will not recommend is windows movie maker.
sure it's free and all but if you have a gopro you have spent something like $300 to $500 bucks already...
what's an extra 50 to 100 bucks?
you can not get the most out of that money if you don't get something half decent to edit your footage
Have a look. they don't cost that much (http://video-editing-software-review.toptenreviews.com/)

We have the black edition, very happy with it. As said most complaints are more computer related and not the GoPro itself.
The first time we used it we thought the battery was really bad, so bought the additional battery that clips on the back.
However with several cycles the battery life has extended greatly.
The remote works well, but if it goes underwater it loses connection. not good when i'm swimming and trying to control the camera on Daughter's surfboard.

The sd to ipad adapter is good too.
Can't load to iPhone, but can transfer straight to iPad, which is handy

depends what you want to play it back on. All do 1080P HD, WiFi etc etc. Black does 2.4K and 4 K video but only 15 fps. Other than that not much difference in the actual camera. I sell them and others. Check out the new Ion action cam with GPS and the software. Pretty cool. Message me if you want more info

Get the black edition.
You can always dial the resolution or frame rate down.

Thanks for all your help and comments
Well I went the white Go Pro
Yeah yeah starter one but when I explained what I wanted from it and the salesman told me the black was far too over the top. Then he went on to explain the difference between the white and silver was so minimal that for what I was going to use it for I would not notice it anyway.
So got the white with spare battery, 32g card, windscreen mount , mount bag and go pro storage protection box.

Does anyone know if Gp Pro are intending to bring out a model that also make it a fully featured dash cam ie with gps, and the other features that differentiate a Go Pro from a dash cam - yes I know a Gopro can be used as a basic dash cam.
I would like a fully featured dash cam and a GoPro for other stuff but cannot afford both.

With any camera I would suggest getting a steady cam mount.
Shaky hand held or solid mount moving footage looks dreadful and spoils what might of been interesting footage.

That is one thing you can't fault go pro for
They have loads of different mounts for all applications

I looked at the Go Pro.
I couldn't go pass the HD sports camera QC8020 sold by Jaycar.
I think I paid about 150 dollars for it.
It comes with all the mounts you would ever want, stick on, clamp on, bike , surf board, windscreen suction , etc.
The big thing I noticed with the GO Pro is every thing was a extra and the camera couldnt be aimed via the display screen as per the Jaycar item.
The screen on the Jaycar is also a touch screen to bring up different functions, but it will work as a 2 button in its water proof like a Go Pro clear case.
The Jaycar also has a remote control with it to.
I have found pic quality to be good when played back straight from camera to computer or TV( all cables are supplied).
I found transfering my vid onto you tube badly drops quality.
Specs are
5M pixels (cmos)
4x digital zoom
2.4 inch touch screen
Image resolution....12m(4000x3000), 10m(3848x2736),8m(3264x2448),5m(2560x1920)
Video Resolution VGA640x480(120 frames second),HD 1280x720 (60 frames sec),HD 1280x720(30 frames sec), FHD 1920x1080 (30 frames sec)
will run for 6 hours on lowest resolution on 32 GB and battery life is about the same.
It also has a anti viberation function

This is one of my first plays with the camera........it was not running at anywhere near full picture quality.
No sound because the camera is in its protective clear case.

I found it works very well though the windscreen on its dash cam function, but cannot be connected to GPS.
On vehicle/dash cam mode it vids in 6 min sections and repeats over itself every six hours of vid.

gopro 2 has time lapse also...in fact for those going out and buying a gopro you can get a gopro 2 second hand or old stock and has the same functions as a silver.
its just a tiny fraction smaller in width

I bought a GoPro Black, at a very good price from a sponsor, but like has already been said, you then need to buy all the other stuff. Battery life is my only problem and I did have to turn down the resolution to use on my computer. The remote uses more battery as well. The stick on mounts are good, but a friend lost one at the race track recently and it promptly got run over due to the mount failing.

As for the remote found the IPhone app great and no need for the remote. Which is just as well as it is extra with the white.
I also saw the stick on mount and wondered if that could happen. Looking at a bull bar clamp mount for the cars. If I use the stock on mounts will use them for on the dash inside the car only.

The Go Pro 2 with backpack WiFi remote is a pain in the arse, I'm thinking seriously about the Kogan(AEE)action cam black edition, it comes with everything, including an SD card, albeit only 4GB, the GoPro doesn't.
$139
What's in the box
Kogan Full HD Action Camera
30M Waterproof Case
Remote Control
4GB MicroSD Card
Quick Fix Mount
Flat adhesive mount
Vented adhesive mount
1/4 tripod mount
Battery
USB cable
Rollbar/Bike mount
Helmet mount
Car suction cup mount

Have a look at ION speed pro, I have two and can't fault them. plus they are water proof to 10m without a case and the sound quality has it all over Go Pro. You can even link up to 8 cameras to a single switch so if they are mounted in different spots you can turn them on and off from the drivers seat.

$369.99 + $54.99 for the suction cup mount + $99.99 for the remote control = $524.97 + whatever the SD card costs, that's a lot of money.
Is there anywhere you found it cheaper, even Amazon was around the same price.
Looks pretty impressive.

We sell them as a kit, they come with three mounts 12 and 240v chargers 16gig card for $390. Remote is an option. We also sell Go Pro's and I personally think the ION has better quality. The other good thing with them is you can plug them into any computer and change setting or download with no need to load and software first also not having to use a case is good too.

Interesting. I have Go Pro Hero 3 Silver and it works a treat. The wi-fi is great. If you get the Go Pro app on your iPhone or iPad you can turn it on and off using the phone as well as do all the settings and changes as well as seeing what you are filming albeit with about a 1 - 2 second delay.

With these modern Go Pro type thingy's, if they are dash mounted in car or boat, can they be powered from ciggy lighter or is it battery only ?

I have the Hero 2 with the backpack WiFi, so that makes 3 devices to go flat and the WiFi and remote goes flat long before the camera, although I use a USB cig lighter to power the remote, but the WiFi backpack is the draw back.
I missed getting a Hero 3, didn't realise they were out at the time I purchased the Hero 2:mad:

I know you can power the remote from a cig lighter, but not sure about the camera if on the dash, never actually tried, you need a cig lighter adaptor to take a USB cord from the camera, which is what I use to keep power to the remote.

Yeah you can use the camera with the power in and the cig lighter adaptor is the same as one for an iPad. So don't buy a gen one just buy a iPad one.

I personally don't like the distorted look given by the fish eye lens on these types of camera. For in car use,you can't beat a dedicated video camera.
I am with Baz on the Kogan camera,I pre ordered one a month or so ago,it should be here within a day or so,as it has been posted.I just want it to take some images under and around the vehicle, whilst driving.Don't want to damage my video camera. The action camera that I do like,is the Drift HD Ghost,it has built in screen and remote and used normal camera mounts,so no need to use corporate mounts like Go Pro or adaptors to suit, and had a list of accessories available, but they are around $450:(

I have just ordered five Go Pro knock offs that actually offer even more function and extras than the latest Go Pro HD Hero including a screen on the back of the camera unit so you can see what your recording.
Unfortunately I won't have them for another few weeks yet as they are part of a big order. Once I get them and test them I'll report back how they perform. Best thing they only cost about half of a Go Pro.

Got the black one on cc points. Awesome.
Works great with the iPhone wifi preview screen, and also makes the setting of the menu easier.
Read very carefully your sd card specs. Find the fastest you can, then double check. Without the top line cards, you won't be able to use the ful hd.

I have the hero 3 silver, great cam! Only real benefits over white is the extra camera lens option (wide angle, etc).
It fits its purpose quite well, mine travelled up the cape with me and got some great footage!
The drawback? Sound is crappy quality when in the waterproof casing. It's only "ok" when in the other case too.
Cheers
