In 4000km I will be replacing the plastic pan etc on my gearbox with the steel version. I also want to completely replace the fluid.

I will be doing this myself so am interested in the best and cheapest way to do a mega flush at home. I appreciate doing a basic fluid drain over and over and running the gearbox between drains but this uses a lot of expensive fluid that ultimately is wasted. I have had heard you can disconnect a pipe from the cooler to the box and put in fluid by way but I am not sure that would be easy to do at home.

So what is is the best way to fully change the oil at home. Also I see that some people have changed from Lifeguard to a Fuch fluid which is much cheaper. Is this Fuch stuff compatible with Lifeguard - if it is I would not take the risk of using it but it might be Ok as a flushing fluid rather than the more expensive Lifeguard.

Thanks

Garry

Garry, I'm going to be launching into the same exercise very soon, so have been investigating alternatives to Lifeguard 6, and came across the Nulon fluid which is specifically marked as meeting Lifeguard 6 standards http://www.nulon.com.au/support/specifications-list/198/#.Uhl6BjAaySN

Problem is the Nulon is "do not mix with other fluids" and "dry fill only"

It really doesn't make sense to market it, if that's the case. There is little hope that you could drain 100% of the previous fluids out.

Interesting that Gulf Western SynTrans is also being recommended for the 6HP26 as well, but doesn't have the notes that Nulon do for theirs.

Hi Garry,
Have a look at this link

I have not done this, just remember reading it a while ago

Thanks Dave but given the cost of a new gearbox I am not prepared to put in anything that is not proven even if the maker says it is OK. I have heard of the Fuch being used by people with no problems but I would not be prepared to put it in as a replacement at this stage - would use it as a flushing agent IF it was compatible with the Lifeguard.

Cheers

Thanks - my main concern is that he is running the engine to pump the oil out - as the level gets lower in the box what if any damage is being done to the gearbox/torque converter.

cheers

I have had the gulf western syntrans in my box for 10000 now which was the 2nd tran service. Like new now, whereas was very rough after 1st service with lifeguard 6 for some reason?

The surfaces will still be well oiled but with no pressure to operate the clutches. I intend to do the same to mine.

While this not a DIY method I found it interesting to watch how they do it with the correct equipment:

Had all the gear to do mine but in the end decided was too much of a challenge for me without a hoist, so took it to a trans tech savy with the 6hp26 , glad I did as without a hoist I would have had a major prob with my back , the best $400 bucks I ever spent .

This trans shop had a device he made up that transferred the new oil from the new oil drum through the trans into a container until it became clear with the engine running .

Can anyone recommend a place in Sydney (I'm near Brookvale but prepared to travel) that could perform the mega flush described? It seems a far more thorough and less wasteful process than the alternative (which is what Coopers on Princes H'way would do)

Any reputable firms in Brisbane that can do the proper mega-flush using the machine?

Ayer's automotive in Brookvale is where the previous owner has all my Disco's work done, they're pretty good. Not sure if they do the mega flush but worth asking.
