15 minutes worth watching.

Catalyst: Energy Drinks - ABC TV Science (http://www.abc.net.au/catalyst/stories/3826162.htm)

My 17 yo loves the stuff and I'm forever trying to convince him that they're not good for him.

Wow. I always thought they seemed a bit suss, as in "you don't get something for nothing", and I wondered what the trade-off would be. So I've never had one.

I've only recently kicked a long standing Coca Cola habit and pretty much given up on Iced Coffee too - after receiving a pretty serious wake-up call late last year.

Wouldn't even know what any of these so called energy drinks taste like, and not interested in ever finding out. Fortunately, both our kids have never had an interest in them either.

Still being a teenager (for less than month though) I've had my fair share of energy drinks.
Rarely have one these days, unless I've had a big night or something like that.
I've seen first hand the effects of too many (i.e more than one) in a small space of time, so I've always been a bit iffy of them.
But on the other hand, Everything is killing us, the very act of being alive is hurtling us towards our inevitable doom so I can live with an energy drink every now and then.

Good Work!

I've just done the same thing, id been drinking at least 1L of coke a day, but normally quite a bit more than that! People don't seem to realise how addictive it is
My first few weeks, I was like someone coming off drugs, mood swings, hots n colds, shakes. Had to stop drinking beers as well, id normally have a few beers, then get spirits and coke going,

I'm now at 13 weeks since a coke or a beer! feel a lot healthier, I now go to the gym 3 times a week, have a lot more energy to chase the kids around, and sleep better at night.

I wont be letting my self drink that **** ever again.

I used to drink a few litres of red bull and other energy drinks every day through uni. Its pretty much the reason I quit uni and a load of other things at the time.
I only recently figured out that having an energy drink gave me a 2 day high then a 4 day low. It got to the point when i quit drinking them that I had a massive low and sold a few project cars, quit a few hobbies, broke up with my then girlfriend.
I got into iced coffees after that, more of a habit, grab a drink as I go. Then i realised i was having that much iced coffee I was heading back to where I was.

Now I have a cup of tea in the morning and the odd cup of coffee every now and then. Ive never felt better either, in regards to quality of sleep, general well being and happiness.

It all hinges (IMHO) around SUGAR. Way, way too much of it in our modern diet, - and especially in 'factory-food'.
Add the caffeine, with other chemicals, and the combined effects are savage. Not only are they addictive, but 'sugar' (as well as habitual sweet-tastes...) is one of the more addictive common substances around.
- The brilliant marketing... intellectual laziness of the average person, current trends toward shallow, instant gratification - and why are we surprised that this is problem?

Not for Red Bull etc it ain't !!!

Indeed, carbohydrates in general - suger is a carb. - and excessive grains but without the appropriate fats, is our current dietry delusion which we're all paying for...

I've dropped heaps of padding, replaced it with muscles...(joined a gym) and my net weight loss is around 27kg. Since December last year.

Blood pressure has dropped, blood sugars improved to virtually 'normal'....by cutting out carbs and increasing FAT intake, and eating everything that the Food Pyramid says I should'nt.

I'm not going to get into argument about it, a great read is "Why we get fat and What To Do About it" by a science journalist, Gary Taubes.

WHY WE GET FAT AND What TO DO About IT Gary Taubes Paperback 0307474259 | eBay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/360648915527'ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649)

- for a cheap read...

Whilst saving for my trip I was working 60 - 70 and sometimes even 80 hour weeks working two jobs which pretty much meant split shifts...

Often when I felt like death a red bull would have me feeling like a million bucks again.

I know they are bad for me sometimes it was all that kept me going.

since then I have learnt there are ways to get natural stimulants like gaurana without all the nasty other stuff.

the main thing I learnt though was.....

to never ever work that bloody hard again
then you don't need the rubbish

For the last twenty or so years I have only drunk water, tea and coffee.
coco cola is a very good toilet cleaner on stubborn stains.

Most of the time I just get a buzz by talking to myself.
Gets a bit lopsided when I just try to listen.

Much the same as Olbod, tea, coffee (maximum of 1 a day), fruit juices and water are all I drink. Don't like Coke or many soft drinks, and I could never fathom the need for "energy drinks".

Mother, Red Bull, V, all those kind of drinks I can't understand why people would want to drink them, with the huge amount of sugar and caffeine in a single can. Each to their own, I guess.

Oh, you youngsters. Just wait till you walk around a corner in a few years and the Middle Age mallet smacks you on the forehead. Then you'll be scrabbling for health and fitness just like the rest of us! :p

Never liked any of these energy drinks.Dont like the taste of them.

The side effect caused by d-glucuronolactone and taurine, two ingredients in Red Bull and other poison drinks it is nothing new.
Back in 2003 the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) have an opinion and about this 2 ingredients and in 2009 was well known that taurine was harmful to the brain and d-glucuronolactone on the kidneys.
If these drinks are mixed with alcohol then it can be deathly

Watch out for the fruits juices, just as much sugar in commercial juice as Coca-Cola: Apple juice as sugary as Coca-Cola, experts warn (http://www.smh.com.au/lifestyle/diet-and-fitness/apple-juice-as-sugary-as-cocacola-experts-warn-20130824-2sier.html#ixzz2d2sdQ7Bk)

For a second I thought that said Middle Age Mullet and I was truly terrified. :D
I'll be okay, I'm considerably more healthy in my eating habits now than a few years ago, and I'm not a heavy drinker, I don't smoke, etc.
I'll enjoy it for now :p
