View Full Version : is the Landy wave dying?

as some of you may recall from my threads a few weeks ago I have just done another trip from Emerald to William Ck via Birdsville. I will bring the tyre report up to date in the other thread later. What concerns me is over 5000km's with the different events happening around the different outback centres, there were a good number of Land Rovers of various breeds, whom/which I passed on the track and whom/which I waved to quite vigorously, and whom/which didn't respond except for the D4...thank you D4, whomever you may be. What is wrong with the rest of you?:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:: mad::mad::mad:

Mate - I think the wave is dead and past rigor mortis. :(
About the only time that I get a wave is from other D3's / D4's - and they're very few and far between. Usually only from others which look like they are set up to venture further than the shopping centre / soccer field / private school car parks.
Passed a white D4 with Queensland plates twice in Kalgoorlie yesterday. Looked very well set up for touring and was probably towing a van when on the road, as I saw it turn into a caravan park in Boulder. Waved twice and just received bank stares in return - but getting used to that now.
I did get a big wave from both occupants of a white Evoque a little while back down at the Kambalda turnoff on the Coolgardie - Norseman road. :D
Very occasionally, I get a wave from D1 / D2 drivers. Defenders - have long ago given up on them. Only one I get a wave from is one locally who I know the owner of, and he knows my D4. His wife also waves when she's out & about in the Defender.
Doesn't seem to matter whether I'm driving the D4 or my old (now my son's) D2. The response to waves to other Landy's is about the same.

In nsw, I really only get waves from other defenders and have basically given up on discoveries... just far too many are soccer mum cars. Having said that I drove past a d2 today and was craning my neck to check it out when the driver noticed and waved.. he got a big one in return.
I have also noticed that since going to a puma i get far less waves returned form other defender drivers than i did in my TD5.. everyone waved to the TD5.
The only time i dont wave to deefers is if i didnt see you. Discos.. only if you wave 1st. Freelanders.. honestly have no idea what they look like.

Hmmm, I must be the odd one out.
I wave to everyone on the road, truckers, all 4WD's, utes, bikes, even ordinary cars.
OK, I don't get many waves back, but I wave to everyone I pass in my travels.
It must be hereditary, grandad did it, dad did it, I do it.

A few years ago I was travelling across the Nullabor in my 300tdi. Coming towards me was a vehicle of some description that as soon as it got close the driver switched on flickering lights all around the window and some sort of electrically powered hand that lit up and waved back and forth. On top of that the occupants nearly fell out of the vehicle waving out the windows. Talk about a welcome. My wife and I having waved frantically back laughed our heads off. Jim :D:D:D:D

I wave to all 90/110 and series Land Rovers I see and have since I worked it out in my first series land rover many years ago.
Usually I don't return a wave when I don't see, and there is only 1 that hasn't returned the wave and they are younger drivers who I would drive past every couple of weeks, so I don't think they understand yet as I didn't when I had my first one at 18.

I wave at all and sundry, even get a few back from D1's and D2's, get a few raised eyebrows from Rangies, and get quite a few waves from Defer's :D
It'd be nice if we all waved freely and kept the "good vibes" alive.

I wave to every LR that I see, even those parked on the side of the road or sitting in the shopping centre car park. In fact if I walk past one I give it a pat and say G'day mate. Ever had a wink from a Landie ?
I salute the heritage not the driver. Sometimes I get a wave back which is nice but doesn't really matter.
It's up to us to keep the tradition alive.
Cheers.

I still get a fair few waves in Brissie from Defender drivers, but only when I'm in our Defender. If I'm in our D4 and wave at a Defender, I think they are too surprised to respond! :D

I wave to all Defender drivers and almost always get a wave back. I'm guessing that ones that don't wave didn't see me as I always feel guilty when I notice another Defender too late to wave.
D4 and D3 drivers have never returned a wave so I don't bother any more. D2 slightly better and D1 better again.
I think that the older model Discos (and certainly Defenders) are owned by those who *want* a Land Rover so understand the wave.
As a side story, I was recently on the Strzelecki Track heading south when I passed a small LR convoy going north. The fist 3 or 4 cars were D1s and D2s - the drivers all waved as expected but the last car in the convoy (a Defender) had the most enthusiastic waving I have ever seen - all the occupants waving like lunatics. I think the boredom of the Strzelecki track had got to them!

Its hard around town, but I always try to wave to Defenders and Series. Don't bother with Discos or anything else unless they look like they are used as nature intended.
On the open road I try to wave at everything - even Evoques!
Unfortunately, being in a Disco 4 waves very rarely get returned. Sad, but understandable given the average D4 driver. I did however get a wave returned by a Series III a couple of weeks ago, between Orange and Bathurst - made my day!
Maybe Defender drivers should start waving at all Land Rovers. Sure, it will be frustrating and you'll no doubt get a very low strike rate, but it might get more people thinking about it.

hey Sam D.....whats boring about the Strezleckie track?
Well, the view after the first 100km or so - it's just all so 'samey' - there is little in the way of variety of scenery. And the road is better than most of the motorways around Sydney so there is no real driving challenge there either. Well, *most* of the road is better but the bits that aren't so good are just very corrugated and rocky, and still don't offer much in the way of anything different to see.
This is my opinion anyway and I was disappointed by it as I was looking forward to it so much. :(
Now, The Oodnadatta Track was very different! :D

We only wave to other Deafeners in the metro area or south of Perth but in the country further than about 250 kays north of Perth I usually lift a finger to other travellers regardless of vehicle.
I can't see the point of waving to plonkers who don't know one vehicle from another.

i wave to every landy i come across :) a lot do not wave back but i figure thats because they have no idea of the 'family community' as they are nto landrover folk as such. just people in a vehicle. ones that are there for astatus symbol, or a horse person who isnt ito it for example. i even wave if im in my other car and normally get a delayed wave back, i think then they work out that the person waving at them must have a landy at home too :D

waving to D3 - D4 , Freelander etc will never work,
I think I've mentioned it before but a few years ago family living in USA (executive types) told me they were going to the LA car show , I said great get some photos of the Landrover DC100 for me, One of them said he really likes the Landrovers, (suprise to me) They test drove Discovery and Freelander in LA but ended up buying XC-60
anyway a few months later they moved to Sydney and I drove them around in the Defender looking at Houses to rent and then around car yards to buy a car, over about a two week time frame, on the last day one of them asks "why do you have a LandRover badge on my truck"
I nearly fell over
That just about sums up why you will never get a return wave from RangeRover D2 D3 D4 Freelander , they don't even know what a Defender is, and chances are they never even noticed one in the LR Showroom
Other than Defenders and Series Landys (80% return wave) I only wave to D1 and RRC (about 10% return wave) , your flogging a dead horse with the others. If they do notice you wave they just think "who the **** was that" you might as well be driving a Toyota.

I have an idea to bring back the wave! We can take this to social media and get all landrover owners involved! A lot of people don't know/understand the wave concept especially drivers of the new discos (not saying all) we should raise awareness of the wave and bring it back!
In short everyone needs to take to Facebook and Twitter and lets spread the word instead of just talking about it with other like minded people who wave at each other

Once off the highway and on the way to the farm I wave to everything.... Its a country australia thing I assume, based on the remoteness of everything here.

Dont worry James, I'll wave to you as I'm another one of those POS Puma Drivers as well :D. I wave to just about all Landy's on the road and probably get about a 70% return wave ratio. It's mainly the soccer mums that don't wave back but mainly in the Rangie's and Evoques. But who cares, if they're that ignorant, that's their problem. Life's too short to worry about it.

Hey James, I bet that was the one in the Silver SE D4, no hope there for a wave, My wife waves on my my behalf when she is driving my D4. I am under instructions to wave at minis when I am driving her mini cooper s clubman - I am judicious about that though as some male drivers of other minis might get the wrong idea :o.
BTW both the red and yellow 110's refuse to return my wave. There is also a bloke in a stornoway grey tray back 110 that also refuses to wave. I might need to add bullbar, RWC & snorkle to my D4 before I am considered to have any amount of LR credibility in their eyes:(

We just had two weeks up around Crescent Head then Woolgoolga.
Hubby waved to literally everything(that he saw) with a green oval badge, from Defenders and Discos through to Sports and Freelanders.
He got a return wave about 5-10% of the time, and those were other Defenders plus a Disco or two.
The Defender's a tad hard to miss on the road. Maybe Land Rover drivers aren't losing the wave but are becoming more conscientious drivers and are concentrating only on the road in front?

I have noticed a lot more waving since I've come back to gold coast.....it always used to be a bush thing......maybe it's becoming a trendy urban thing.
Maybe they are waving at Grumble in sympathy.
Maybe they are waving at Grumble's driver in sympathy.
Maybe it was just those drivers at that time.....you know , concentrating on getting to Birdsville in time to get a decent camping spot near the lagoon.

In the main I have given up waving to anyone here in Adelaide.
On a recent trip down to Goolwa, I waved to a few Defenders, and more than a few Discos(both 1 and 2) and no one waved back:mad: the wife couldnt understand why I bothered.
Dont bother in town anymore the majority of the time.
Every now and then I will, just to see what happens... but to be honest, these days I really cant be bothered taking the time!!
Cheers
Matt
I'd say that 9 out of 10 Defender drivers wave or return a wave in my experience in Adelaide, except for a beater of a white 130 I see around Sheppards Hill Rd from time to time.
But that's Defender to Defender.
Little or no action (give or receive) with Discos. Had a D1 wave once, but it was a lifted/modded mud tyred machine (looked great) and not the usual Nan and Pop piloted D1s and 2s up this way.
Was waved at by the driver of a modded FJ40 today. Seen it around Blackwood. Owner must appreciate older 4WDs rather than just older Toyotas

I would have to apologise for my lack of waving. I spot other Land Rovers and by the time I've looked at the mods (if any), the plates (to see where its from) and the exact model (HSE SE etc) they have usually passed and I realize that I have not eyeballed the driver to return a wave.
Yet, just this week I did have a reciprocated wave with a D3 in Adelaide's suburbs. So the wave is not completely dead.
Mine is a white D4 :spudnikdaddyo:

I wave to all Landies. Just about to give up. Especially Defender drivers. We seem to be very model selective....which is a shame.

I agree. For all you Defender drivers who like to harp on about having 'proper' land rovers and being salt of the earth beardy bush types, you sure turn into snobby ******* if I dare wave at you from my soccer mum D2   :p

Not at all my good sir, I suggested that I am :p
I mean just look at my car....
UHF to contact the nanny, to have the afternoon tea and biccies ready for the kiddies.
Bullbar for pushing cars out of the way in the school zones.
Driving lights for late night soccer or netball practice.
Winch for DIY clothes line, got to keep the school uniforms clean!
Dual batteries to keep the gameboys charged up, or to run a fridge to keep school lunches cold.
Lifted suspension to make mounting the curb easier, helps me practice my terrible school zone parking while not risking scratching my vehicle, that would never do.
Those lumps of steel in the carport for sliders and a rear bar, all to help protect me as I explore the urban jungle.
It's hard, crossing the vast suburban deserts, I need all the help I can get.
:Rolling:
Wave away Robbo
