I just use the GPs speed in my GPS or my app on my phone.
Of course GPS speedos dont work in tunnels, for a while after a cold start or where satellite reception is poor - also they are not accurate when speed is fluctuating such as accelerating or decelerating.
Really GPS speedos are not really an effective alternative to mechanical speedos.
Are they legal in Aust as the sole means of determining speed in vehicles??

I came across this company the other day. Not cheaper, but MUCH prettier...

And you can customise the appearance.
I wonder if they do them in 24volt...?

Hi I was only looking at this today myself, as my speedo is erratic much better with the new gearbox but still not good.
I would prefer one with a external mount antenna like these ones I have been looking at, due to the almost vertical windscreen, the external antenna will give me better coverage and faster fix times with full sky view.
Would not be as much of an issue with canvas tops though.
And no they are not legal as your only form of speed indication. I have been down that route.

When I asked the RTA in NSW they said no because they don't work under all conditions.

One of the reasons for a poor speedo reading is lack of lubrication in the speedo cable or a damaged/kinked sheath.
Remove the cable inner by undoing the connection at the back of the speedo. Withdraw the inner cable and clean off the old oil and any grit then lubricate the whole cable with a fine machine oil like sewing machine oil.
While it's out inspect the entire length for damage or unusual wear patterns, this may indicate a kink at that location.
You should also check that the path of the cable outer is flowing curves rather than tight right angle turns.

Spot on I do have a kink but not sure how to fix it.
It is being caused buy the oversize booster stopping the straight run to the speedo.
Yesterday I removed the cable and oiled it all was fine but when refitted it goes tight again.
the only real fix would be to swap the speedo to the other side, but that is a bit of work from what I can see most of the wiring will require lengthening.

Why not just put in a new speedo cable? I put a new one a year ago and the speedo works great.

I have just been through the process of replacing the broken cable in my Series 3 Lightweight,I could only get what appeared to be a universal type to suit a S3 head, but it was about 2ft (1/2 metre) to long so I had to source a S/Hand Series 3 original cable then do a restoration and service on it,all in and working, well, as good as a Series speedo does :) I have a suspicion that the Lightweight has it's own length cable even shorter that a 4 cylinder S3.

The cable is not kinked or damaged, it is the routing to the speedo with the larger booster stopping a straight run casing the cable to bent tightly.

DON'T DO THAT! :D

When I asked the RTA in NSW they said no because they don't work under all conditions.
It's because the GPS relies upon an external source of information that can't be tested, or a certificate produced to show the accuracy within prescribed tolerances - it's owned by the US Government.
Stick a car on a dyno and you get a certificate, stick a GPS in a tunnel and you get Jack....

I've taken my GPS into many tunnels and no one has ever given me a jack. It's very unfortunate because I need a good jack for the D4! :BigCry:
It's a joke Joyce!

Just thought I'd bring this on up again as I've found my speedo to be way out.... I've found an IPhone App called Speed Box which is a GPS Speedo... and its free... Have used it for the last few days running up and down to the city and at 80 it seems right with the traffic in an 80 zone... So, I've modified my speedo to suit... Better than having a phone clipped to the dash!!! :D

That error comes about because of the oversize tyres you are running. With my BFG MTs I have the opposite as my speedo reads 10% faster than what I am going.

I've got an aftermarket VDO speedo. I fit a TD5 Speedo sensor in the lt230 and wire it in to the Speedo then when I first use the vehicle I press and hold the mode button and drive it a measured mile, press the button and Viola! Calibrated to my gearing

The other issue with GPS Speedo's is cloud cover which will knock down the number of satellites available to measure ground speed.
I use an Android app on an old phone when im teaching my kids to drive and on a cloudy day they can be way off accurate.
Mechanical or electronic coupled speedo's are the way to go.
