Seems an awful waste of a good Defender  but I guess rules are rules.

Some Defender owners might find the video disturbing .......

Feds crush a Land Rover Defender to scare illegal importers | Motoramic - Yahoo! Autos (http://ca.autos.yahoo.com/blogs/motoramic/feds-crush-land-rover-defender-scare-illegal-importers-152348269.html)

The owner probably just drove it away. Takes more than a crushing to put a deefer off the road.

The person importing it had altered its details to show it was pre 1985.

therefore chassis and engine numbers are incorrect and as such they cannot sell it, the vehicle cannot be returned to its original location as its numbers are all wrong. Only option left to them legally is to crush the vehicle.

They release the video because it is a detereant

Dont blame the "feds" blame the goose who tried to 'sneak' it in.

He's probably behind bars if they caught him :)

I'm surprised how tough those tyres were

Does seem a waste. Be nice to think they had an avenue to raise revenue through the sales of parts. Destroy the motor and chassis, part the rest

i cannot view the video but it looks like a POS puma.........the rear diff is probably buggered, the clutch needs replacing, the gearbox is about to drop out, the bonnet is stuck, it probably refused to start, down on power because the EGR is playing up, the front prop sharf is about to fail and its had some dodgey fuel and it needs a new engine.....

:D:D

There is a surprising amount of hate and loathing on this forum....

And that's before they've left the factory.

It does seem such a waste but have you known Americans to do anything else?

http://www.aulro.com/afvb/rss-news-feeds/180237-feds-publicly-execute-illegal-land-rover-baltimore-jalopnik.html

That fellow at the end had no Idea about Landrovers. I'm tipping a '75 Defender would get much more than $100,000.

Another point that should be made, one of his assertions is that it was an unsafe vee-hi-cull. Yet, a twenty five year old Landrover would be ok to import. Does that mean the Americans think a 25 year old Landrover is safer than a five year old Landrover?
Yep. I'd go with that.

In any case when people re-birth a vehicle they deserve to have it crushed. In Aus its a crime with a fine of tens of thousands of dollars with possible imprisonment.

If you can't do the time don't do the crime!

its a Td5, the rear p38 diff is a giveaway , if anyone was going to do half a job of passing it as 25year old they would have put a Salisbury in it.

i hope they made the criminals that imported it watch as they destroyed it

if you see the price Defenders, or Countys that are Defenderised , go for on ebay U.S. you would then know that the rogues who are doing this are making more than pocket money.

Bugger "kick it to me" make that "Give it to me - give it to me" !!!

Ouch this hurts just looking at it....:(

Painful to watch:( but the stupid thing is there is still many states in the USA where its not mandatory to where seat belts or helmets on your motorbike. Car makers have to spend millions of dollars on safety for cars in the US market just so these people who are to stupid to put on a seat belt might live. ;)

I don't understand why it had to be crushed. I would have though it could be used for parts or farms and private property. Just not registed for road use.

Clearly a shallow PR excersise, that poor defenceless Defender was swept up in. What a waste.

Safety issues? Why are they not also hunting down Ford Exploders and ... and ... Jeeps!?!

Hypocrisy!

criminally modified vehicle.

restamping the body numbers will make it dangerous to resell.

On the safety joke that is the USA ford f-trucks, dodge ram, chev and GMC trucks are the biggest selling vehicals in the country with millions on the road. yet they are exempt from passenger car safety laws because they are classed as a truck. So billy bob red neck can cruise around alabama in his F250 which has the safety of a 1800s horse drawn wagon but dont import a disco with no air bags its a bit unsafe:)

Yes, I also hate Landrover for building the Puma, and loathe it, its the reason I wont buy a new Defender but am looking to another expedition brand to tour in.

The US has very strict rules about importing vehicles as they must comply with their safety rules,so vehicles such as that defender which they deemed as being to late a model was crushed, they allow vehicles like Series, and early County's in according to their age and by their chassis/vin number, their main beef is that there is no crash padding or airbags, very similar to Australia's ADR's which came into existence to protect the Australian Car Industry which limits the type of vehicle that can be sold in Australia, one example of that certification is that when the Discovery 1 was released in UK in 1989 it was not until 1991 that it was certified for sale in Australia, the time difference was to comply with Australian ADR's like wise the 90 in the 80's which only came as a V8 it was not given an ADR,as certain other manufacturers complained that a V8 SWB 4x4 was too dangerous for the Australian driver, but then one could buy a shorty Cruiser in Victoria and take it to a "specialist" engineering shop and have a V8 Chev 350 fitted, the shop then would back sell the motor to the dealer, all very under the counter.

The funny thing about all of the rules here in the states, is its all about money. The 25 years is a rolling date. Next year, one year newer vehicles will be allowed in, and continuing. The emissions and safety is just the excuse to not allow the importation of vehicles to compete with the domestic manufacturers. Anyway, thats my take on it.

hmmm,, just watched it again, it is a 200tdi, green oil filler cap, distinctive thermostat housing and the ubiquitous black coolant bottle., has an lt77 too, so not much of a loss in the transmission department:angel:

was a nice looking vehicle though:(

Apart from the illegal manipulation of vin etc...have a listen to what this 'expert' thinks of the safety of the Defender

This has been shown on here many, many, many times - vehicle was not crushed because it was unsafe but because it was rebirthed as vehicle that was different to that presented.

Well sorry if I'm rehashing old news. :p And yes I know it was crushed because it was an illegal import, I did make reference to that....

Apart from the illegal manipulation of vin etc..
I'll be sure to do a search on what has already been covered before I post anything again.

Sorry I didn't bother to watch the video.

What I know however is that some years ago the USA bought in requirements for a level of rollover protection that the Defender doesn't meet. For a few years Land Rover got around this by fitting external rolllover protection to the NA spec Defenders.

The USA does allow importation of vehicles that are older than 25 years, so quite a few would import late model Defenders, and falsify identification to make out they were >25 yo. That was what lead to the crackdown and the public demonstration of said crackdown.

So in respect of the vehicle safety requirements ................

I am lead to believe that requirement is also why Nissan don't sell Patrols in the USA, but I stand to be corrected.

I certainly am concerned about the poor roll over protection offered by the Defender body structure and I don't dismiss it lightly.

G'day folks.
As Davehoos says, there is more to it than no airbags.
There has been a growing business in 'Improved' LR products entering the USA.
Basically, old chassis with new bodies, and all mod cons.
I've seen Puma bodies on RR chassis in an (unsuccessful) atempt to skirt the 25yr rule.
The process of importing a LR can be fraught. Research I have done shows many Perentie chassis to be NOS upgraded to Perentie spec. They would probably get crushed as their #is inconsistent with the vehicle.
Proceed with caution.

Exactly! It is not crushed because of safety issues, it is VIN fraud. Someone swapped an importable age car ID number onto an NON importable car and got caught.

This has been put up quite a few times, a pity but as stated if the identity has been tampered with it cant be sold, wrecked or returned as officially it hasnt existed!!!

so this is the US option... fair enough too, they even puncture each tyre one by one as part of their procedure
