Hi All,

I've had my D4 for 3+ years now and I've only just asked this question...

When you have a D4 in Off-road height, is it normal to get a bit of clunking and knocking through the steering and suspension when in rough conditions?

Mine has always done it since new but I've never thought to ask if its normal...

Cheers,

Kev.

Yes, at first it can be quite off putting.
You could think that your suspension bushes where stuffed!
Quite different to a coil sprung vehicle.

If you get clunks & bangs on road though get them checked out.
Also the Anti Roll Bar bushes are quite often at fault for such noises.

Thanks Guys.

It's good as gold on the road at normal height :D.

Cheers,

Kev.

I don't recall the D3 or D4 doing that in off road height. HDC does introduce a lot of drama and low range is a lot noisier of course..

Mine did that when the control arm bushes were on the way out, definitely more pronounced in off road height on a lumpy road.

I don't recall any difference, but will now listen more intently.

I had the same experience at 48,000km and it was the ball joints in the front lower control arms- both lower control arms replaced under warranty fortunately. Soon afterwards I noticed a knocking sound when entering/leaving my driveway at normal height. My LR dealer couldn't find cause so I took it to my independent LR service guy who found lower control arm bolts not torqued correctly- has been fine since then. David

Right....well that was inconclusive....

I'm not certain if it's always there, as in TR selection, but I think it is. Most of the time I'm in Sand Mode....but it just feels like play.....but always figured it was just due to the fact that the car is on tippy toes.

It's absolutely fine on the road at normal height.

It's going in for a service in a couple of weeks so I'll get it looked at just in case. I like having some facts before I present a possible issue though.

Cheers,

Kev.

Sorry if it appeared inconclusive! Actually I had loud knocking, clunking at offroad height and the front lower control arm ball joints were clearly worn. I don't recall how much sound at onroad height at that time but it was not as bad. Once replaced it was heaps better but I still had a minor occasional knocking at onroad height which was subsequently fixed by tightening the bolts on the newly installed lower control arms. Hope that is clearer now! Regards, David

Hi David,

Sorry if you misinterpreted what I meant. I didn't mean your post was inconclusive, that's why I didn't quote you. I meant the outcome of the scenario is inconclusive.

It appears that good folks on this forum, like myself, have had knocking and rattling since day one and have assumed that to be normal. Others haven't experienced any of those issues/symptoms and are stating so.

So what is normal is my question....that's all I meant.

As I said earlier, the car goes in soon for a service so I'll get them to check it out...however, that in itself is a quandary....how do a CBD Dealership test a D4 at off-road height for articulation grumbles....

Cheers,

Kev.

Had mine in off road height for days recently in the desert and no clunking or banging at all.
The ride is definitely harsher, but that is normal.

And while in remote areas i seem to listen for any different noises constantly, and noticed nothing, except a loose light in the bulbar, thanks to ARB.

My D4 is currently in LR for a service and indeed there is a problem with the suspension/steering....which is what they believe has been causing the noise.

I'll update further once I pick up the car and get the full story.

Cheers,

Kev.

Hi All,

So got the car back yesterday and there was indeed something wrong underneath which LR believe was making the knocking noise.

I ended up getting these items changed

x2 Bush-Arm-Front
X2 Bush-Arm-Front (different type $108 as apposed to the $19 previously mentioned ones)
X2 Balljoint-Lower
X2 Bush-Roll Bar
There was obviously some other associated nuts, bolts and washers changed during this process.

This was all covered by my Allianz NEW Extended Warranty.

I'll find out this weekend if its made any difference, as I'm off to Moreton Island. :)

So, for all you good folks stating that you have knocking too....you may have a problem. I'll update after my trip, to see if its made any difference.

Cheers,

Kev.
