Usually plenty at the local Op Shop.
I got one a few years back for an RACV Rally where they asked for 'period dress'. I even managed to find a tweed tie.......

One of the regular habitués of SE Qld. motor cycle swap meets parades around in a genuine pith helmet. He has to guard it closely as it is the goal of quite a number of his fellow members to acquire the helmet and pith in it.

You'll need a pair of 'Bombay bloomers' to complete the costume.

If I remember correctly they were worn by the British when in the jungle to stop the monkeys pithing on them, hence the name........

Did you get a cheesecutter cap and jodphurs as well? If so, you could join one of the snobby vintage sports car clubs. Might need a British Racing Drivers Club tie at some.

No, but I did find some bib & brace overalls. So I wore those with my tweed jacket, check shirt, tweed tie, tweed hat (drop brim not flat) & brown brogues and went as a gentleman farmer. I've got a picture somewhere.
I was looking for a deerstalker hat but couldn't find one....

Is there still the Irish shop in McWhirter's, Fortitude Valley? It always had deerstalkers on display.

Brilliant there are a few fellas wear these at our "Edwardian" / "Vintagers" shooting days. I flavour the flat cap myself though.
Still looking for affordable breeks and vest to suit the Qld climate ! (Quite a challenge).

Darn that dastardly dirty lying log!
To attack a spiffing auto like that one is just not cricket..
The Pith helmet worn by Dennis was quite fetching and I might say
he looked a treat driving the '48 and grinning like Biggles with a
new sopwith eh what?!
Now I shan't say anything about that flat cap... Eh Ian???
Rightho, keep calm and keep going chaps, Jolly good show!!
Cheers

Do any of you remember "Pike Bros. Gentleman's Outfitters" in Queen St. Brisbane?
Pikes offered "solar topees" same appearance as a pith helmet but made from 1" cork covered in a sturdy khaki light canvas with leather chinstrap and brim band. Made to measure.
Pikes were a quite upmarket store. They kept regular customer details on file so one could write or telegram them for a suit, shoes, hats, have them made to your recorded size and sent out. They also had a tobacconist counter and would keep your preferred cigars or tobacco in your personal humidor and send them out as required.
This was a time of gentlemen in business not businessmen. John Pike favoured sports roadsters and would park his in Queen St. right outside the shop. One of them was a custom bodied Bugatti. His mate, Fred Tritton of Trittons Furniture and Coupon Furniture had Downings of Wooloongabba build him a special to race at the Australian Grand Prix at Leyburn. He engaged Bill Kelly who did most of the work as his riding mechanic for the event. The last riding mechanic to be entered in an AGP.

Brian - sounds like a GREAT shop. I wish there were more like that around today.
Modern retailers don't generally have any REAL concept of customer service.
I wonder if that was the same Bugatti that was at the RACQ Motorfest?

correcting an error in post #31 above. It was Cyril Tritton, not Frank, who had a special built for the AGP. Based on one of those late thirties big Wolseley gentleman's cars. Downing's built a new chassis for it based on the design of the Riley 9 raced by Peter Downing. Didn't start in the AGP following ignition problems in practice. Later got road registered and driven around Brisbane by Cyril.

Hey! Digger!
I've found a pith helmet for you.
You might think it's a little expensive but it does come with a free Series 1.
