HI,

Got a Oricom UHF088 cheap (brand new) from a friend today - still in the box. It wouldn't fit in his nancy-wanna-be-4x4.

I think it'll go on my defender - got a bull bar mount OR am willing to sort something from the roof if need be. My questions are:

A) what aerial to get? I have no idea about this stuff.
B ) Do I need it tuned? the manual says get a 477mhz?
C) what brands should I look for?
D) Min price range I should look at?

Thanks in advance

too many options! I want something general purpose with decent range but not something that will be useless in hills. Does that mean go for a 6db gain? also should I go a bullbar mount?

For a bullbar mount you'll need an elevated feed, so this type with spring mount would suit you.

It will do slightly hilly (undulating) as well as reasonable straight line flat country. Generally speaking, all uhf radios work best 'line of sight', so the higher your antenna, or the vehicle it's mounted on, the better range you'll get. This one is not suitable for a roof or bonnet mount.

Check out Mobile One. Aussie made & pretty good quality for the price.

I picked up a 6db gain aerial for the bar for $70. Mostly for flat terrain but still will perform ok in hilly terrain.

Im running it straight to a 5W handheld off the cable mind you as I find screwing the stock handheld aerial on in hilly areas to be more effective but all in all the range in hilly terrain is not that good anyway either way & most times I really need to communicate is in convoy where distance is not an issue either.
