Defender roof bars

Hi All,
Looking at getting roof bars for a defender to carry surfboards and other long items. Trying to work out if a platform or tray will work on the roof bars to put on only when needed.

Depends how much fiddling about you like to do.

I have four Rhino Bars on my Defender with a tray (for D3) mounted on the rear two, and a side awning attached to all four. Four bolts would remove the tray.

I dont take any of it off though.

My 2 bob's worth after several false starts. The universal/modular option is second hand rhino commercial bars with RL210 legs. x3 if carrying light stuff or x4 if carrying heavy stuff. You can use the RL210 legs on the rhino platform and basket if you want to spend the extra money down the track. When fitting to the platform I had to grind down some material off the legs to accommodate the shape of the platform and rivets on the underside of the platform. If you don't you won't have a flush contact surface and bend the legs adding stress.

Rhino make defender specific legs that at about $110 a pair. They have a cut out to accommodate the shape of the roof. I bought SH off a Toyo troopie and used the angle grinder to cut some material out of legs.

FYI - the 2.2m platform will accommodate a RTT, shovel across the width of the platform and spare 33" mud tyre. If mounted roughly in line with the back of the defender the leading edge of the platform will be about the join line in the roof (of a 110) thus reducing wind noise and turbulence. Not that i hear the wind over the mud tyres, gearbox, transfer case and engine anyway.

Rhino are expensive but in their favour they are modular and there are plenty of accessories. I've also had excellent after sales service/warranty from Rhino which seems to be a dying commodity in the trend towards cheap manufacture, fly by night operators.
