I was able to pick up this jack from a local workshop 6501865019
Which fits perfectly in the useless storage space for the back seats

Might not get the wheel off the ground.... I think you need one that can raise to a height of +400mm

have another look here:

Storing it on it's side may cause a problem with leaking. Best off being stored upright if possible.

Does it say anywhere on the box what the fully extended/retracted heights are?

EDIT It does say, I missed the second picture.

I've ordered a Merc Sprinter jack from a wrecker.

Hopefully it's exactly the same as the one in the failed group buy. Awaiting delivery in the next couple of days.

Might work on the suspension but unlikely to be high enough under the chassis jacking points.

Pretty cool trick when you lift it that way without removing the fuse.....once you get it started the wheel will lift by itself.

yes, it is nifty, suspension up to off road height, jack up to the control up then lower the car and watch the wheel lift of the ground - no sweat! :D

I don't even need to raise the suspension on mine. i leave it at normal height, then start jacking it, and it will lift by itself. I swap my tyres over when ever I go offroad and my lad is blown away how it works. It's a neat party trick.

But for the next tyre onwards I remove the fuse.

My avatar shows a wheel flexing pic. I left if there for about two minutes and when I reversed it off the stump the car stayed at weird angles for about 10 seconds, then it levelled out.

A second hand Mercedes Sprinter jack, not exactly the same as the UK eBay one. Same manufacturer and 3 ton instead of 2.5 ton.

It extends with two stages from 235mm to 550mm.

I got it from a Mercedes wrecker for $90.
All good.

Rich... What's the closed height?

~Rich~
8th September 2013, 07:48 PM
235mm is the closed centre height, 240mm at the edge of the prongs.

After considerable research I have found and ordered the Weber two stage jack normally supplied with Mercedes Sprinter vans. 2.5 ton lift from 260mm to 570mm.

They are coming from an eBay (UK) seller. Item number 261281033753. I have bought two because they can be shipped together for about the same as shipping one and my brother (Lancenot) wants one for his D4 too. The seller accepts email enquiries from outside UK and quotes the shipping on a case by case basis.

Two jacks delivered for $145 each. Should arrive next week.

The story from the seller is that the EC rules stipulate that people who take hire or lease vehicles in Europe are not to change wheels themselves. To comply, the dealers remove the jacks and pass them on in batches of 100 for agents who sell can sell them cheaply. (@ £ 25 each equals approx $42).

Hope others find this information useful. I would recommend batch/group buying if you can arrange it to cut down the shipping costs.

I replaced my sizzor jack with a non-airbag model D3 bottle jack, it's a 2 stage jack and not bad but like the sizzor jack is a wind up jobby, can be a pain, but not bad once you get used to it, still heaps better than the crappy sizzor jack.

Then it struck me, the D2 bottle jack was a 2 stage hydrolic jack and very compact, so I got myself one, works a treat;)

I did look at this one Rob, it's a big jack, at least 10cm or more diameter and heavy too at 12kg, the minimum height is good though, but the weight and size put me off.

There is a good range of bottle jacks at the tool place opposite Bunnings in Wollongong, that one was there.

I had seen that jack advertised as well. I agree it would do the job and then some, but I am trying to keep the weight of my tools and recovery kit down. The 12 ton jack at 12kg would seem to be good value otherwise.

Baz - I had also been thinking of the D1/D2 jack - have you actually used it in anger on your D4 - will it fit OK with suspension up and a flat and will it go up far enough etc

Cheers

Are the bottle jacks better than what comes with the D4? I haven't picked up my disco yet, but one of these might be good for the accessory laundry list, if they make a tyre change easier.

The standard jack is the same for the L322, D3/4 and L320 and is positively dangerous and can fail with no notice or the car roll off. Authorities should have required LR to do a safety recall but this has not happened.

No but I used it all the time on my 4" lifted D2, I also checked out how it sat under the D4, put it side by side with the D3 bottle jack.

I'll check today for you Garry and let you know.

Isn't the D3 bottle jack for coil sprung vehicles that have a jacking tab on the lower wishbones, not for jacking under the chassis?

Yes, works on the D4 though, there's a couple of spots on the control arms you can use:)

Sorry Baz - but you need to go out and try it again - this time put the jack under the chassis as per the owners manual ;).

Of course if you put it under the suspension wishbones you don't have to put it to offroad height first :).

Thanks I might have to look at getting one.

Cheers

If jacking under the wishbone then why not have the vehicle as low as possible as long as the jack fits under, but pull the 20A suspension system fuse to stop any movement. At home I use a small trolley jack under the shock/shock mount with the vehicle at access height. A small wind-up or hydraulic jack under the wishbone somewhere is what I see as being appropriate.

Thanks Baz! I've been carrying the 2 stage bottle jack from my RRC in my van for its wheels but have just tried both front and rear of the D4 using the RRC jack at the points you used. The D4 was at normal height but may need off-road with a flat tyre. The suspension fuse was pulled - standard procedure for me.

I think if the tyre was flat, the jack may need to be put elsewhere, I have faith that it would still get it high enough, there is another 3 or 4" of travel left on the second stage of the jack.

I've bought one of Andy's jack adapters and I'm thinking about the Omega 2 tonne bottle jack to go with it for my D4. With 181 minimum to 418 maximum height it is suitable from what I have read on the forum. My question is whether the 2 tonne lift capacity is definitely ok. I believe it would lift the D4 but I don't want it to just be able to lift it. I suppose I'm asking if there is a good enough capacity margin with a 2 tonne jack?

Here's a link to a seller of this jack. It has the specs for it.

Its fine. The jack is not lifting the weight of the whole vehicle.

I use a Toyota wind up (mechanical) bottle jack, doesn't leak/drain, doesn't fail.
After LR jack failed, I went online looking for either a Toyota or Nissan 4WD Several Toyota Land cruiser wind up jacks on Flea Bay at present. ($80-90)
