View Full Version : P38's Gathering at Bathurst (race weekend).

Austrailia's first ever (probably!) P38 focused (not exclusive) gathering is planned for Bathurst in 5 weeks. Event is planned more as a touring-camping event than off roading so even the shiny examples can come along and join in!!!
Check out the thread over on the upcoming events page.

Wrong side of the country for me, but hopefully you may even get some media coverage so that the WA p38 contingent can at least see it. Some pics of the gathering would be good too :cool:.

Just throwing this out there. How about something grander in the future. Like P38's at the birdsville pub.
From corners far flung and wide. Assuming we get there!

Well for our inaugural meet Bathurst actually is a little easier and closer to central for the main population. The original idea being a heap of R&R (Racing and Refreshment) and plenty of chilling out around the campfire!!! It has the obvious draw-card of V8's howling around The Mountain for 4 days. Which most younger(ish) Aussie men (well those with any testosterone still floating around in their body) have on their "ONE DAY" list.
I thought just getting something started would be a challenge this time around... most P38 owners struggle to get themselves motivated to get to the other side of town for a catch up. Let alone a full days drive away camping for close to a week!:wasntme: Happily surprised so far!
In saying all that I reckon we'll get enough for a "committee" and happily agree the next meeting place over a drink or two around the campfire at this one!!! :D
You gonna pull your finger out and join us Sean? :angel:

You might have to pull your finger out and get up to Bathurst for the 2014 committee planning session too Andy!

Would love to. Bucket list item. It's more of a social study reason for me! To see the wild life in its natural environment! :rolleyes:
But the misses is due our 2nd mid October. Wouldn't be a good look.

Nah, bring her along mate!
Imagine that?!? A new Landie lover born in the back of a P38 at Bathurst! Swaddled in a ground sheet and nursed beside the campfire...
Blimey, that sounds almost poetic... :angel: I might have to check with the boss and see if we can time a fourth little monster for the next meet!

Doesn't anyone like driving, camping and V8 racing anymore?!?
We still have a few vacant spots left on our site for the Bathurst Race get together.
Even if you don't want to do the racing, there is a motor museum nearby, and the local tourism people say there is "a heap of stuff going on in the region" during this time... I can also see no reason why a 4wd drive day couldn't be arranged if enough interest occurs. And heck... we could even do a workshop session (or something similar) if people are interested to do a valve block rebuild, or a compressor refresh, or something!
BTW, it should go without saying (but I will anyway!) that this is a not for profit event by the organisers. We are just trying to get a regular AUS P38 event kicked off... and would love your support.
Please feel free to tell us what you think even if your not going to attend/drop in.
Appreciate your time.
P.S. does anyone know how many P38's were originally sold in AUS?
P.P.S. does anyone know how many are still on the road?

Having been to the Great Race a couple of times before, I know what to expect up there & I can't wait..
I have planned my weekend already & for those who have never been this is what my plans are to get the most out of everything..
Thursday;
Travel to Bathurst, maybe have a bit of a look around the town itself before heading to camp 38 to set up base camp and spend the evening sitting around a nice fire with beer in hand telling and listening to lies..
Friday;
Up early, head to Mount Panorama and have a look around and having a good look through the National Motor Racing Museum https://nmrm.com.au/
I'll go through the merchandise stands on the Friday and get everything I want then so I'm not carting around bag of stuff all day Saturday & Sunday..
Saturday;
This is the day I'm most looking forward to.. Straight to the track first thing and straight to the top of the mountain for the day. There is a shuttle bus that runs up and down the mountain all day. The sights to be seen up the top on the Saturday are unbelievable..
I plan to spend pretty much all day up there wandering around & drinking plenty.. Will watch the shoot out from up the top before heading back to base...
Sunday... Race Day..
To the track early and take in the build up to the race. I this year have a grand stand seat on the start finish line so I'll probably park my bum there for the start and the first 10 laps or so. But if I wasn't in a seat, I rekon the best place to watch the start from is down near the chase at the bottom of Conrod Straight.. There is plenty of general admission areas there with big screens & the sight of 29 V8 supercars coming toward you single file on lap 1 doing the best part of 300 km/h makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up...
Bring it on.................

One thing I would highly recommend everyone has for the weekend is a good set of very comfy shoes..
To have a good look around, you will do a lot of walking and that mountain is very steep & if your shoes aren't comfy your feet will suffer.. I've just got myself a nice new set of runners for that weekend..
I'm also going to carry around one of those fold up chairs that go into a bag on the Saturday & Sunday.. Something not too heavy or awkward to carry around.. I've got a couple I picked up at the last V8 race I went to at Phillip Island a few years ago.. They're Jack Daniels Racing ones but I don't like them anymore coz they race Datsuns... I don't like Datsuns..

Good question mate. I will ask our camping hosts if they know and come back to you. I was also wondering if there will be any local bikes to take a ride on?!? :angel::twisted::wasntme:
BTW, it looks like we now have a grand total of 3 P38's for our innaugural meet... we are obviously setting some sort of record there! We'll probably be outnumbered by non-LR vehicles on our campsite at this rate...
Either way, it should be a hoot! I am getting a little revved up already!!!
How about a get together before leaving?

Bring bikes for sure
If nothing else, they will make for good fun around camp after a few cups of tea. Mine is an AMG63 mountain bike from 1989... Good for 0-50 km/h in two hours (that's down hill with a tail wind!).
BTW, I can tell you that I will be aiming pole position for every "pushy" event (if not by nBring bikes!

Hi guys, I've sent the last few posts to a new thread in the trip reports section. Here's where it is at - http://www.aulro.com/afvb/multi-state-reports/184249-p38s-gathering-bathurst-race-weekend.html
As this was an upcoming event, I've closed the thread. You can take it all to the trip report now. :)
Cheers - Gav.
