Hey just thought I'd introduce myself. Just bought myself a 1999 P38 from a deceased estate. Pretty sure I got a good deal. had all checked out by Deacon Automotive and they gave it the thumbs up (for the most part)

After driving a Pajero around for quite a few years, I can really feel the difference...sweet ride. I am excited and nervous about its future given all I read on engine problems but fingers crossed. I will certainly look after it.

There are a few things I need to do in the forseeable future. Any help appreciated.

1. Exhaust/Muffler will need to be replaced in the next few months...showing signs of rust
2. Where can I get a duplicate key made? (I only got one)
3. Is there any way of running an aux connection from the stereo for an iPod/iPhone?...its still the original. I understand if I have to get a new stereo installed.

Cheers

G'day and welcome mate!

You can buy kits that "remove" the CD stacker and allow iPod input.

Other forum members may be able to enlighten you more on this and the other things you are looking into!

Cheers

I think I drove past you in Elwood yesterday! Nice looking Rangie, it caught my eye with the black finish and nice rims.
Replacement remote key fobs can be a tough one, very pricey too, about $400-500 believe it or not.
I think you can get a non remote key without too much drama, but the remote has to be programmed in the UK specifically to your vin number.
Here's an earlier thread on this topic:

Here is a thread on one way to do an ipod set up without replacing the original unit:

Hope that is of some help,

Welcome!

If you find out how to add an Aux input for an iPod let me know too, even better if you can find a way I can use bluetooth for calls and music!

If you have the money to put in a new exhaust it will be worth it... More power and hear the best V8 sounding engine ever made.

Did you take your Pajero off road? And will you be taking this off road? There is a huge difference. The P38 will walk areas you really struggled with the Paj, just no deep water!

I know it's not a perfect solution, but the iPod (or similar) can be connected to a small FM transmitter then transmitted through your radio. No modifications required for a change. :D

There was a site in the UK I came across that added a 3.5mm input jack to the original head unit. You had to send it away. If you are keen, I'll see if I can dig it the details.

The alternative is to replace the head unit. There are some available that are compatible with the rest of the system. I wanted to do away with the CD changer and dub woofer, so ended up changing the whole audio system, which has enabled DVD, iPod, Bluetooth, reversing camera (for girls) - oh and a wireless! And GPS if you want.

Sorry to steal the thread but.......

What head unit did you put in? Was there a problem with the amplifiers when connecting the new unit?? Did you put in a double din unit or stick with single din? Oh and have you maintained the steering wheel controls?

I would like a unit like you described but have heard that it is a hard instillation and there are problems with the amplifier and you lose steering wheel controls.

I did away with the original system. The door speakers were replaced. The door amps no longer needed. It was a Kenwood system including 400w amp where the CD changer and sub used to sit. There is a retractable tv screen head unit in place of the clarion unit. The iPod sits in the glove box.

But there are some with p38's who have managed to find replacement head units and retained all of the original system - Martin (fantom p38) is one such gentleman. He should be able to help if this is your favoured approach. He won't mind me saying, but he's a techno geek - loves his gadgets.

Steering wheel controls were sacrificed. I have another remote control in my life though, which makes up for the loss!

Hi

The GROM USB2 Plus with Land Rover leads and bluetooth option is the way to go.

It's what I intend to install as soon as I get some other stuff done :D

On my 96 I replaced the head unit with an Eclipse. Just soldered rca plugs to negative and positive of each amplifier. My pre-outs are 5 volt.

Are the alpine systems similar, or is it a digital signal between the two?

A few head units now are programmable in terms of steering wheel buttons.

Hi

From what I remember of my research, there are connectors for aftermarket heads to connect to the Alpine steering wheel controls but not to the Clarion.

I decided i wanted to keep the original look, so the GROM is the way to go for me. The steering wheel controls all work and the 6 CD selector becomes a playlist selector.

As far as I can work out, the head needs to support line level outputs or you need to wire up attenuators to match the impedance and level required so you don't overdrive the amps

That was my findings in my read up.

But my 2000 povo pack SE with no stacker or sub, only had the cross overs for the speakers and must have had the amplifier in the head unit itself.

So one pro for the povo pack was it made it real easy for an after market unit..

HSE's have the cross-overs in the doors, they are not amplifiers! As great as the sound is from the factory stereo, it's not amplified!

Hi

According to RAVE, the amplifiers are mounted in the doors, perhaps they were crossovers before MY99 ?

Steve

Im pretty sure they're amps before 99, and they have an active cross over between the bass and mid, and a passive crossover between the mid and tweeter.

I wired up the normal speaker outputs to a door to see what would happen and it was all distorted.

Could be! I'd say the Bosch update may have included a more powerful head unit?

Hi

They certainly switched from Clarion to Alpine / HK in the MY99 model.

"All had an all new stereo with more power and speakers (300wats and 12 speakers) "

To my knowledge the alpine unit had a central amp behind the sub. It also had digital correction and time alignment specifically for the p38 cabin.

According to RAVE, the DSP was added in MY2000, so not all of use have it!

Hi

Oddly enough I am now inclined to look for an one DIN all in one unit.

I really don't want 3 or 4 screens, I want a reversing camera, GPS and music all in one unit. There just is no way to do this with an iPad.

Apparently the latest units keep the steering wheel controls etc:cool:

I will research more and keep all informed

Okay, I finally got around to sorting out the iPod/Bluetooth in my 99 by keeping the factory Alpine head unit.

Cushie Audio in Sydney sell the GROM BT3 unit which has:
1. iPod connection
2. Aux connection
3. Microphone and built in Bluetooth which will pair with your phone. I have an iPhone 5.

Simple installation by connecting to CD changer plug at back of head unit.

Works via all steering wheel controls

Cost $220 and took me 30mins to install

Highly recommended!

Cheers Simon

Hi

Looks like a great little unit. What harness did you use? According to the web site it does not mention a RR older than 2002 using the bmw stereo.

All you need is the RVR data cable.....best to call them and chat.... they were fairly helpful
