300 tdi coolant temp sender colour?

If possible, could someone with a 96 or so 300 tdi have a quick look at the coolant temperature sender near the thermostat housing? Green or black band for this thing?

After having some work done on the 130, I now have a temp gauge that reads 1/2 scale when cold, and full scale at running temp. It was fine when it went to them....

The mob that did the work admitted to using my original sender on another job (!), and replaced it with a new black one.

Apparently there are 2 types of sender, green or black band.

Have checked;

Earths,

substituted another gauge,

apparently tried a green sender as well,

all wiring tests ok,

then tried substituting wiring,

All to same result.

So either the wrong sender or a cactus one?

Having tried most things, I'm back to thinking the most simple solution is probably right - the sender is dodgy or wrong.

I have a TM2 unit, so its just annoying that the original temp gauge now doesn't work.

If anyone can confirm the correct colour sender , that would be very helpful.

The parts manual lists the 2 types, but does not specify chassis numbers for the change from green to black.

I've got a '95 build, '96 compliance plate 130. The sender is all black plug (underneath the oil film) with one black and one green wire. Interestingly, my sender is on the lower block side of the thermostat housing. My workshop manual has it on the underside of the forged metal part of the top hose. The moulding is there for the sender but its redundant, so I can't say if it is a standard fitting sender or has been fiddled with.

Can't help you with what should be fitted, but you might be able to find some data on the temperature/resistance readings for each type, and at least be able to check if it the one that's fitted is working OK.

Ive got a 1994 300 tdi. Temp sender wire is green, I had a similar issue so I just bought a SAAS Temp guage which is much more accurate than the stock gauge and came with a new temp sender. It has a numerical guage instead of land rovers bar type

Just checked the sender I removed from mine (98 - 300Tdi) a few months ago, the sender is black around the bullet connector pin.

That's the same as mine so is probably the standard fitment.

What is the part no. stamped around the top edge?

You can just make out AMR...5 on this green one from my P38A - probably AMR1425

If I recall correctly, MicroCat indicates the AMR1425 is standard for a Disco 300Tdi (and several other LR models) but an AMR3321 for a 300Tdi Defender.

Here's a graph of thermistor measurements I made recently. The first two columns are figures quoted by PhilipA regarding the upper and lower resistances at each temp. I used the same temp points to take my measurements. As you can see, the AMR3321 followed Philip's figures pretty closely but the green top AMR1425 used in many LR engines does not.

That confirms that I'm looking for a black sender, part AMR 3321.

The lower resistance when cold should, (in theory), mean my gauge will not run to 1/2 scale when cold.

Although the current sender definitely has a black band, I'll have a look to see if it has any markings on it.

Something not quite right here!
