101 Fuel Consumption

From, my now 5 years experience with 101s I have found that fuel consumption varies wildly depending on how and where it is driven and does have extremes.

The best fuel consumption I ever achieved was driving the desert west of Cameron Corner where it would trundle along with virtually no throttle at just above idle at about 1000rom in 4th gear and overdrive on and giving 19l/100km (15mpg), on road gentle cruise (85kph) is 20l/100km (14mpg) around town I get 27l/100km (11mpg) and the worst I have ever got was at Stockton where I got 50l/100km (5.6mpg) and this is on Petrol where gas will be 10-30% worse.

Yesderday I did 135km through the Brindabella NP - in doing so I ascended from 500m to 1300m and back to 500m three times so some steep climbs and descents spending most of the time in low range 3rd.

I used 48.5l of petrol giving 35.9l/100km (7.9mpg).

So for those planning on getting a 101 make sure you account for fuel - though not so bad when cruising along on the freeway or in the desert.

Your Cummins is not going to give anywhere like 14/16l/100km when you are in 3rd gear low range climbing mountains.

Comparing apples with apples - I get just over 20l/100km at 100kph so not a lot worse than you - you can drive a lot of kms before your modifications become viable in fuel cost. Noting that I also have LPG so to actually drive around my 101 on gas getting maybe 10-12mpg is only marginally more expensive in fuel cost terms than driving my RRS TDV6.

My bent V8 on gas will be a cheaper to run than your Frankenst101 :).

just come back from a similar sort of trip.
Bendeathra/and tuross river valley tracks and lots of other stuff in between.
I carted 3/4 tonne of fire wood though half of the trip in a WW2 jeep trailer.
Was using a LPG on the highways and petrol in the bush.
I find If the motor spins in its happy 1500 to 2500rpm range the fuel burn is good, up hill or down dale.
If I work the 101 harder or use its top end in climbs up fire trails the fuel burn goes though the roof.
On the way home for a while I pushed the 101 up from its happy 90 kph Overdrive and and let the motors torque find its own speed up up the hills to a ring its neck for everything its worth.........I was trying to burn off a old 60 series cruiser with 3 F motor............there is nothing in it, we couldn't decide the issue.
While I was having fun the fuel burn was poor.

When I bought my first GS it was averaging 8-9mpg, on gas on road driving and a combination of short and long runs.

Original engine dumped in favour of a high compression 3.5 efi and overdrive added saw it up to 12-14mpg average.
A later change to a 3.9 and auto box saw 15-16 achievable on a long (solo) run.

Piper 7 was running 7-8mpg running with all the recovery kit on board (around 3 tonnes all up weight) with the original engine on gas and not much better (although with more power available) with the 3.9 on SU's.
Efi onto the 3.9 saw 15-16mpg achievable on a run. Not sure what its doing now it's running empty, but I reckon low 20's should be achievable if driven sensibly.

If someone wants to do the maths.
I did Nowra to Braidwood.......Braidwood rd no stops.
Towing that Jeep trailer full of split fire wood and my camping gear in the back of the 101 for 2 days.
I travelled on the braidwood rd at a speed which the 101 was happy at.
The Braidwood rd is a mixrure of tar/dirt hills and flats.
I used exactly 38 dollars of LPG at 91.6 cents per litre when I topped off at braidwood.
No I don't know the exact distance travelled........you have to use a map.

I find standing between the chassis rails on mine pushing is quite economical but due to the size of the fuel Tank I've got fitted and leaks the range is not good.

therefore

122.2 km for 41.48 lt
= 33.94 litres per 100Km

Ah, but that works in my favour.... It'll be running on veg oil.... I'll get the lump in and will try and get some decent figures up. :)

There's a good vid of a guy running an old Audi 5E on wood gas... Trouble is he spends the first ten min stood on his stool making adjustments to the stainless tank/gas producer mounted on the rear of the car.... :)
