Looking at getting a new engine sent over from UK. I already have quotes to get it landed in au but not sure of the rest of the charges. I'm expecting duty and gst, how much should I be budgeting on getting it to Townsville assuming it will land in brissy. Would I be better off seeing if I can get a delivery to my door price from uk end? Landed should be around 4 g.

Charges are 10% GST and 10% import duty payable to customs.

Earlier in the year I purchased a complete tdi head from Turners in the UK, at the time they told me that they do send complete engines door to door.

In my case total costs were well under $AU1000 so there were no other charges

So without making further enquiry I assume that there would be no freight saving in not getting it send straight through to you, but it would be good to find out if there a difference in freight costs, if any.

They also mentioned that they could use an "economy " freight rate and the delivery time would be "about a week" instead of 3 days

If its a diesel engine on its own without a gearbox it will be duty free, so you will be up for at the minimum -

GST
Customs lodgement fee
DAFF fee
Port service charges
Broker customs entry fee

Charges are 10% GST and 10% import duty payable to customs.

GST applied to the final cost so is also applied to the import duties - also applied to the additional administration fees - normally a couple of Hundred $$

Whatever you do get it door to door, that way apart from custom and GST fees there should be no extra charges. Every time paperwork changes hands in a door to airport shipment there's a fee. It's there door to door but it's part of the freight charge.

As an example, I just bought in a winch and an auto in two shipments. The freight cost was the same, $300-. But the winch was door to door and express freight (under 100kg). The Auto was 110kg and air freight door to airport. cost $300- plus another $380- in fees on landing. So the winch costs must have been minor if the landing fees were the same or the fees are a gip.

You know that they add those costs into the purchase price dont you and usually more than the actual costs.

There was another thread with a list of overcharged costs from DHL. I haven't had any trouble with other companies. The other main thing with door-to-door is you don't have to fumble around with brokers and sending paperwork and organising payments and all the rest, which I've done many times. You just track your shipment and call your company when it gets stuck somewhere.

DHL's issue and it also applies to others is not all their freight goes on their aircraft. So theres a fee from the real carrier for loading and unloading. A fee for handing over paperwork at each stage. When it gets here because customs have to deal with the carrier and then the disburser there's higher fees.

The winch shipment was TNT all the way. I was copied into the freight quotes and the goods costs were as advertised in the local currency so there was no loading.

The last straw with DHL was phoning them and despite sending them the email I received from their own global forwarding they denied the shipment even though I could track it online via the flight number.plus they wanted $320-to deliver the frate from the airport to western Sydney when I got a quote for less than $100-

I just got a parts order from the UK, 2 boxes, 32kg, $1,780 in value inc freight.

Taxes and charges amounted to $302. It was sent via FEDEX, once it landed FEDEX called me and advised me of the tax, I paid over the phone with a credit card, and it was delivered to my door the next day.

I wish I could have their frequent flyer points (Wales - London - Paris - London - London (other airport) - Melbourne).

This still worked out to about a third the price of buying locally, and still cheaper than splitting the order with the other recipients.

Was that 32kg per box?

Was the $1780, excluding the gst and tax?

I must say I did save as it was shipped without an invoice so when it got to the DHL clearance at this end they asked for one. They clearly have no idea and fortunately Ashcrofts listed it as a rebuild kit.

So 5min in word modifying the invoice to read as a rebuild kit, listing the large components that were visible. At a price that was compatible with minimising further costs and all done. I later found out it had shipped with invoices but because of the number of hands it passed through and everyone wanting their piece of the paperwork it never arrived with any.

Pricing for shipping's pretty random at the moment. I currently have 2 x 16kg boxes, each 40cm cubed carrying 2 x alloy wheels in each and it's come out at ~$350 door to door. I arranged that myself via an agent after the shop I ordered them from quoted over $600. Having said that, it's taken 5 months to have them made so they've also increased in price by 20% thanks to the exchange rate shift

I had quotes last week for shipping a new steering rack for my RRS, got anything from $170 - $300 from 3 different LR dealers. Awkward size, shape & weight makes it dearer.

I'm also looking to ship an engine back to the UK, a mate's after a P76 block & crank to build a monster V8 demo engine. Haven't managed to find anyone willing to do that yet :(

Just find a company that does regular exports to the UK.
