Hi guys
I currently have wireless home network at the house.
However I have never managed to get the wireless on my big computer to work properly so in order for me to get any use out if a computer I had built I'm going to have to connect it direct to the router.
In order for me to do that I have to move the router from the lounge room to the study
Issue is I don't have a phone socket in there to be able to connect it too
So my question is are they easy enough to wire up?? Could we run a wire from the original socket through the roof and to a socket in the study that we put in?
I did run a large Ethernet cable at one sage so I could connect it but the dogs ate it so would like to put something a little mor perminant in if we can

You could just put a wireless card in the computer. They are only about $30.

Hi Dullbird. Having spent 34 years doing that, the simple thing is to parallel the two wires on terminals 2 and six with a new cable and run it to your computer and connect another socket to the same numbered terminals. Jim

It's really easy, just piggy back the wires of the existing socket (or splice) while match the colours of the wires and wire up your second socket that same as your first.
have a look here:

do you mean a wireless card on to the motherboard or a dongle?
because the computer has a wireless card it just fails to connect properly (hasn't done from the get go of when it was first built) I don't know whether its the card or its the strength of the wireless setup I have, when it did go back to the shop the wireless worked fine apparently.
I just want to hard wire the computer now I think for the internet just so I can get on and use it like I bought it for

however my laptop and TV connect fine to the wireless and they have even more walls between then and the router than the computer oes in the study.

You may find that it is the security settings that's preventing the computer accessing the router.

it can access it just chooses not to...it might connect one day out of 10....
trust me I have had these issues for a very long time, and we have looked at various different things over that time to try and fix it.
The computer went back to dave at one stage for other issues and the wireless I believe never missed a beat. its possibly just an incompatibility problem.. a number of people have had issues with this particular card not connecting I have read heaps online about it.
I have updated software etc, I have updated Bios all sorts under Daves direction it just doesn't work I have also change routers...its time to wire up make life easy

Does the router have antennae or a port for an external antenna/e? repositioning the antennae or adding an external antenna can make a world of difference.

I am referring to a pci card installed on your motherboard
Type 192.168.1.1 into your address bar.
This should take you into the router set up.
username and password should be admin.
Try to redo the set up, there should be a menu option in there.
Might be an idea to re-install the drivers for the card before you do this.

it has two antennas, I have had two routers...I had put a 7db antenna one on at one stage..
like I have said none of my other computers, Ipads, laptops, iphones, androids, TVs have an issue with connecting and staying connected and they are further away...
I think its the card so I would like to put in a phone socket so the computer can be hard wired

Just be aware that it is illegal to do your own wiring that connects to the public telephone network in any way, this includes running ethernet cables through the walls or roof.
I'd have a look at a powerline adapter which allows a LAN connection over your power cables, and leave the modem at the phone point. Something like this http://www.scorptec.com.au/computer/40557-tl-pa211

He had actually left the modem where it is we have run an Ethernet cable through the roof with a docket at each end this just basically acts as an extension and it still plugs in to the back of the router
It may slow the connection being so long but hey my internet is nothing to write home about
All we did really was utilise the 30 meter cable I bought sometime ago rather than running through the house at the top of the doors we have just run it through the roof to make it tidier:)
