Hi All, I replaced the oil pump bolt on my new disco. Putting it all back together, I have hand tightened all the bottom sump bolts until the gasket is pressing on the block.

If at this stage the four horizontal bolts aren't lining up, is it likely that the gasket isn't in the locating holes properly at the rear and I need to drop it and be more careful or do I need to have the sump on pretty tight to get the bell housing bolts through to the sump?

Thanks
Bernie

you should not be able to overtighten the Td5 sump gasket because of the metal rings moulded into it around the bolt holes, once you tighten the bolts enough the horizontal ones should go in

Thanks for that info, so pretty much should be almost torqued down to compress the gasket a little and then the horizontal ones will go in.

the bellhousing bolts should go in before you torque the sump bolts, just nip them up and then they should go in, poke some coathanger wire thru to make sure nothing is gunging up the threads

dont torque the bolts till they are all in

this may help

Thanks once more goingbush:)

It does say in that tutorial that you should be able to put all the bolts in before you tighten.

Threads are all clear, the sump itself needs to come up tighter against the block for the bolt to go all the way in. I am just worried that as I can't easily put these bolts in I have moved the gasket at the back a little as I put it back (was there a top locating lug on the gasket at the back?) and something (locating lug) is holding the sump a little bit out rather than going into its hole, hence the bell housing bolts not aligning.

I stopped at that point because it was dark already anyway, took me a lot longer than I hoped it would, and if I start tightening when the gasket is wrong I will just wreck it and it will leak forever.

I was just wanting to bounce it off people who have done it before. If the feeling is that the bell housing bolts should go in pretty easily, I will drop the sump and try again.

the way I did it was to cable tie the sump gasket loosely to the sump with small cable ties, to make sure the locating lugs did not move out of place.

then cut each cable tie and pull it out one at a time, replacing with a bolt.

sounds like your gasket has slipped as it should not be that difficult, you may have to do the cable tie method.

Thanks for that, I will drop it again and try the cable ties

Quick update, dropped the sump this morning. I couldn't see any obvious problems with the gasket but I tied it and refitted carefully and the bellhousing bolts went in without a problem.

Thanks for the input goingbush!
