Hi guys ive just got my first disco its a 92 model BUT has a 91 build plate & i am changing the suspension out. Replacing with Terafirma springs & shocks. I have done the fronts without no problems as they are marked drivers side & passenger side..

I have to put the steering damper on its the same brand. BUT i have this thing i call the diffs spare wheel , i have no idea what it is or what its for . I cant find it in any of my manuals so i am taking it off when i fit the steering damper tomorrow. Can anyone tell me what it is & what its for ..

Its bolted to the underside of the diff under the steering damper bracket..

Also with the rear springs i am going to fit them tomorrow aswell & there marked drivers side & passengers side , BUT i have no idea as to which end is the top or bottom.. One end of each spring has about 4 coils close together then the rest are the same distance apart looking like normal coil springs..

I have circled the end where the coils are close together.. Can someone tell me which end is the top please , as i dont want to put them in & then have to take em out cause i put em in the wrong way..

Thanks Jason..

Closer coils to the top with progressives like those.

I think you will find it is a vibration dampener.

I think you will find it is a vibration dampener.

Yep, forgot about that little gem.
By all accounts, it's not really a very useful item, so not really necessary to replace it.
My 93 Disco1 doesn't have one, not noticed any unusual vibrations, mind you, it is a diesel so hard to tell what bits are vibrating at the best of times.

Hi Jason,

After a suspension modification or tyre size change of any description, that counterweight/ vibration damper becomes totally unnecessary.

Is it necessary for roadworthy?
