View Full Version : Power steering breather blowback

My power steering is leaking fluid out the overflow is it sits.

Well I think it is blowing out then slowly dripping down the chassis after shifting the car.

What might cause the fluid reservoir to pressurize and blow fluid out the breather?

Thanks in advance

over filled, badly bled, suction side of the pump venturi-ing air in on a supply hose fitting pump sucking air in past the shaft seal.

Worked fine until a week or so ago - may have over filled on last trip but would not have thought by much

Hmmm will monitor

Yep. Doesn't necessilarly had to have an oil leak at pump shaft to be sucking air in there either....

So how test if past the pump shaft? I guess I will take cap off and watch while running to see if air in reservoir

when Im bench testing I start putting hyradulic oil die on the seals that I suspect to be venturing and watch the oil colour.

of course it helps to have access to a wide variety of non dyed oils to begin with.

I was of course looking for some sort of in situ testing I could do or telltale signs

Reservoir practically empty when I looked at it sat and shifted the truck - was full last time I looked - and a heap now on the tray below the bottle

Not leaking anywhere else except the overflow from the bottle (unusual I know but this is a new system so all new hoses etc in this build)

And steering is very heavy like the power steering not working properly - ie full of air

So experts does this mean new pump time or is it rebuild-able (and where/how?)?

Pump looks to be an Eaton pump on a 3.5 v8 motor

Could it be that the filter in the reservoir is blocked?

The old tin jobs have a replacable filter but the plastic reservoirs have to be replaced.
Assume this is an old tin job. Why not try a new filter.

Thanks Phillip for suggestion

I should have been clearer about the setup - we are running an after market bottle - alloy with breather hose - that is why I know where the oil is exiting

See pic below - you can see the breather hose running from cap

Does the return line have a baffle inside the tank?

Yes I think so from memory a sort of false bottom - will look and check tomorrow

This is one of the pumps we are trying to see if can recondition

Have found a mob in Brisbane that reconditions power steering pumps - for about $240 - so will see how we go with them on one of these.

OK update on two PAS pump issues in our 2x 3.5 rangies

(PAS 1) The PAS reservoir is not blowing back in Bumblebee - I noticed the oil had leaked out again since filling and shifting the truck last weekend - so I got under with a torch for the first time and noticed oil is dripping down hoses to where the vent hose is so it only LOOKS like it coming is form the vent hose. In fact the hoses on the bottom of the reservoir were leaking (new hoses and reservoir) from the connection. I removed, cleaned and then added two hose clamps to each hose and tightened with small socket. Put news paper under car after decreasing and cleaning = no more leaks after 2 days. I feel dumb (not tightening hoses enough during install and not checking) but then prefer cheap fixes so OK.

(PAS 2) Rangie Ute's pump was noisy and dying - it was a $130 second hand one from a recognized QLD firm. It lasted only a few months after the prior one go very noisy. Both are Hobourn Eaton pumps as per the prior posted pics. We just got the one in the pic reconditioned by Australian CV Joints & Power Steering, 9 Herbert St, SLACKS CREEK see Australian CV Joints and Power Steering - Contact Us (http://www.australiancv.com.au/acv_contactus.html)

It was a pain to find these guys online - searched and searched for a power steering recon place in Qld. Anyway they rebuilt the pump today for $170 in less than half a day. Very happy.

So point of this post is to help others who might have the same pump - get it reconditioned as they are a good pump and rebuildable - cheaper than new anything else and you get to use the old mounting brackets (I don't think other pumps would fit the same mount).

Yes they seem to be a good pump. I had mine off and apart at about 530,000km to fix a leaking shaft seal. Was pretty much like new inside. Was quite suprised actually.

So. Does this setup include a filter? Problem described sounds like a restriction in the supply (suction) hose. will cause partial vacuum in the pump, causing air to be drawn in past the seal. Air plus oil = overfull reservoir = overflow. Can also be that the hose has collapsed internally. any change to a Landrover product can only make it better.

No filter - my issues was a leaking hose not blow back - it looked like that from the oil on the chassis but once I got under it I saw it was a hose not clamped up enough - simple and I felt silly for not checking this first
