Gday All,

We don't have a roof rack or even roof rails on our D3, but would like to fit my awning when we travel.

I was thinking of either making or buying the legs of a roof rack and fitting them to the tracks and mounting the awning to them without fitting a roof rack. I was wondering if people would think the legs would be strong enough to hold the awning whilst the car is moving.

Ok let me have it, possible or am I dreaming.:p

Cheers Ean

I have the rhino rails and a pioneer platform. My opinion is you would end up with a bit of left to right movement as the rails are only secured at single points along the length. I would go for some aero cross rails and this way you will get the stability left to right.

Whilst I don't know the tracks on the D3, I doubt they would be strong enough for a single leg to support an awning, even less so once the awning is extended and there's a bit of wind.
I think you would need the pair of legs and crossbar to have any chance of it working.

Ean,

You will definitely need a set of cross bars.
I have seen one of these awnings in wind & if you have only single side mountings they will break something & cause damage to the roof. :-(

Some of the threads mention that the Rola Roof Racks are cheap & include roof rails & cross bar at a reasonable price.
You can also add a third cross bar to give even better stability when travelling & set up in wind.

Cheers
