You can but the govt costs and redtape do not normally make it finaincially viable.

I think a few people need to investigate the import regulations a little more.

You are able to do a personal import for a vehicle built in 1989 or after, so long as the vehicle was owned and available for your use in another country for at least a year. This has a residential requirement for you to be living in the other country.

There is also the special imports scheme, where specialist automotive garages have approval to import some low volume new vehicles. This is what happens for Lanborginis, Maseratis, Orange County Choppers and even Mitsubishi Delicas. However Land Rover Australia has the rights to import Land Rover and their presence restricts to ability of other specialist automotive garages to use the Special Imports Scheme. Ask Anthony Johnson from British 4WD Imports about this.

So unless you are living overseas, you have Buckley's chance of importing a post 1988 Land Rover privately.

you hear about the jap car scene importing cars to Aus so I can't see why it couldn't be done.

Probs wouldn't be worth it if you could buy the same Land Rover here in Aus.
There are hefty import taxes and the car must be up to Australian standards which also means paying someone to certify it.

As already said there is a scheme which allows cars to be more easily imported if you import your personal car after owning it for a year or two.

Absolutely correct! The law allows pretty much anything before 1st Jan 1989, but only "personal imports" and "specialist" vehicles post this date. To qualify for "specialist" it has to be on the SEVS register, and in Victoria can only be imported by a RAWS garage.

If you are buying left hand drive then the vehicle has to >30 years old to be registered without conversion to right hook.

Good point - it's easy to confuse import requirements and local registration requirements. You have to satisfy both.

Best to get the import permit before the vehicle leaves the country of origin. Some shippers won't touch the vehicle until it has a permit.

We looked at bring in wolfs not as hard as you think but the paper work wow plus when you have a small market it's really not worth it.

With the shift in the exchange rate it's also not really worth it anymore, unless it's a special version not available here. I'd bring a Defender 110 Utility over to use as a travelling truck (nearly went through the rigmarole when one of the 2008 G4 Defenders came up for sale in the club) and I'm seriously considering the hoops of getting a Sportscar not on the SEVS list brought over (VXR220) but it's a fair old lump of paperwork. It's not impossible, just a faff. At least with most Land Rovers they're built to a worldwide spec, so getting them through the ADR's isn't a huge issue. Having been through it all with 2 cars now, it doesn't faze me so much :)

Anthony J went all the way through the paperwork wanting to bring in Defender 90s when LRA wasn't bringing them in. Then was stopped because the model was still in LRs model list, just they werent supplying them.

AJ says the out of pocket costs to be stopped at the end wasn't worth it.

You must be referring to New 90s here?
