View Full Version : To loctite 290 the oil pump bolt or not.

I am about to check the oil pump bolt on my D2 and I have a new bolt with the ring of loctite 242? on it.

It seems to me that there is no easily conceivable circumstance that one would have to remove the oil pump bolt in situ, so it would be desirable to ENSURE the bolt would not undo by slatheriing it in Loctite 290.( which is high strength and supposedly only removable using heat)

If the bolt had to be removed during an engine rebuild the builder could easily heat up the bolt to remove it.

Any words of wisdom or any glaringly obvious downsides that I have not thought of?

The specified loctite is 243.

You might want to download the datasheets and look at the heat ageing and strength loss due to exposure to motor oil specs for the 243 and 290.

From a quick check the 243 is only down to 95% strength after 1000hrs exposure to motor oil. 290 is at 50% after the same exposure. 290 is also far more susceptible to heat ageing.

Pauls point above is very very valid and a great example of one of the flaws in Loctite's marketing. They seem to market and brand their products that there is a Low, Medium and High Strength compound in each range, but the reality is that the properties and characteristics of each of the compounds is drastically different (e.g. Paul's example above). Generally best to stick with the specific recommended product.

Sometimes the bolts actually break and don't just come loose. 290 will make it very hard to remove a broken bolt. Although that may be the least of your probs. I reused my bolt and did not replace, locked with 242 or 243 from a bottle. That was 50000km ago and so far so good. (Touching wood).

I have worked on plenty of mercedes and they have a spring loaded chain tensioner on the oil pump chain. Stopping they slap in the chain. Never saw a bolt come loose. Food for thought for the creative ones on here.

to not...

you use 243

for twr7cx

there is generally a high medium and low strength in each range, the trick is knowing what the ranges are..
290 is not the same range of loctites as 222,243 and 262.
