Ok, after posting on another thread that I have had no issues since I came out of warranty I now have one, more fool I.

Anyway any advice would be appreciated.

My 2009 Defender has a rumble noise ( best I can think off) when I am driving in car parks and my speed drops to the point were the engine is starting to labour I get a rubmle noise from underneath, I sounds like it is coming from the rear but may not be. It does not sound like metal grinding or the such but sounds like something is lose or vibrating, it is very loud and I can feel it coming through the car, I can replicate it easily and does it in second mostly as that would be the gear I go round car parks in, I am sure it would do it in other gears but I have not tested that yet.

I know this is probably a bit vague but any ideas?

thanks
Pat

I think you might find this is normal.... For a Puma anyway. They don't have a dual mass flywheel, so any torque vibration is transmitted through the drive train. This is particularly true if the clutch springs are knackered.

I just had the clutch replace about 8k ago, so hopefully it is not the springs again, but I will be sticking it in for a service next week so I will get them to check.

cheers

What tyres are you running?

Our mud tyres make a pronounced rumble at low speeds.

OK So it's happening when the engine is under load at low speed.

I had something similar - but in a TD5. But in that case the engine mounts had collapsed. When under load the engine rotates significantly, and if the engine mounts are worn, the engine is already sitting lower than it should. If it's rotating beyond normal then it might be hitting any number of things. That will make a huge noise, that will appear under low speeds under load. Could also be worn gearbox mounts. One way to diagnose this, and I did this recently on my TD5, take the bonnet off and go for a spin. You will quickly see when the engine rotates, and be able to work out if it ties to when the noise happens.... Of and if the engine mount is broken, be careful.... My brothers F100 put a brand new 351 through it's radiator when the shop forgot to bolt up the engine mounts.

The other issue I had - again on a TD5, but it's the same on a PUMA, the exhaust hanger at the back kept sliding off, so that the exhaust was close to the chassis, under load the exhaust touched the chassis and made a annoying rumble sound.

If the noise were happening at load whilst at high speed, you might also look at your intercooler hoses. When the engine is under high boost at speed those intercooler (crap) hoses swell a couple of centimeters, that's right 20mm! and if they touch something then they will vibrate and make a noise, well at least until they rub through and pop.

Hey TeamFA
I run KM2's, I know the rumble you are talking about with the tyres, but this one is when the engine is labouring it feels like some thing is loose or going to fall off, when I hear it/feel it I get this picture of the rear axle being left behind. I do dramatise noises in my head though
