Help - no power to low beams - 300tdi

I Have a 94 300tdi.

The low beams are not working, but dash lights, park lights and high beams are.

I have checked the column switch and that is working fine, power going in and out.

No power at the fuses inside, or power to the light bulbs at the plug. I have checked the bulbs and they are fine too.

Looking on the net, the main culprit is the column switch, which is fine, and no relay in this model?

Help appreciated, I need to drive at night!

Main culprit is the column switch.

Sounds like you have checked the obvious. If you have power in and out of the switch then you will need to trace the wiring.

Trace the wiring.... hmmmm... looks like a dash removal job. Sigh...

Have a good look at the wiring diagram before you pull the dash apart.
There's the light switch and the Hi/Lo part of the indicator switch.
On mine it was the light switch that needed replacing, but I don't recall what the actual wiring is. If the Hi/Lo switch is after the light switch it could be the culprit.

checked both the light switch and hi/lo, both working as normal. Taken the instrument panel out and checked in there, no more plugs or anything obvious in there.

High beams work as normal, no power to fuses for low beam. have switched the relays around in fuse area, still nothing.

Only thing that I have done is changed the indicator lights recently, but they all work too.

I had the exact same problem recently.

It turned out to be corrosion to the bullet connectors behind the headlight H4 plug and on the fuse terminals. Buy a set of cheap mini wire brushes from a bargain shop and give them a clean. It might fix your problem.

The other suspect item is the hazard light switch, but as others have already said the main headlight switch is the main culprit. Even though you can detect power going in and out, have you actually removed and inspected it? what they usually do is melt somewhat causing the low beam contact to drift away from it's power source within the switch. you'll still have power in and out, which is why high beam still works. Pull it out first and check, and if it's melted get a new one and also either a headlight loom upgrade from Tim at Traxide on here,

or get your auto electrician to fit a relay to your headlight loom so the power no longer goes through you switch. That way you'll probably never burn out another one.

My mates defender was just written off after a 16 year old showing off to his mates crashed into them, so ive been lucky enough to be able to strip the good parts off theirs.

I just remembered I changed the hazard light switch, mine had no front on it, what would go wrong with that one don_130? The wiring diagrams appear to be seperate from the headlights... might try swapping it back tomorrow.... the low beams went at the time I put it in so could be the cuplrit.... the switch seems fine as the hazard lights work as normal...

I've removed both the main switch and hi-lo and have extensively checked them but they in good working order as well.

For some strange reason, i put a relay in the 'dim dip' position, there wasnt one there already, and this fixed the low beam.... got me stumped as to why that has fixed it when there was no relay to start with.... hmmmm.

Take it out again and see if its still fixed. Might be a simple case of the wriggling to get the relay in has sorted a dodgy contact.
